5791200-289560007th GRADE HONORS CURRENT EVENTS PROJECT 2016-2017Once a month you will find a current events science article which you will read, summarize, and state your opinion of in order to complete a yearlong current events project. The objective of this project is to develop critical thinking skills, gain scientific literacy, and prepare you to become a better citizen by gaining awareness of what is happening in the world of science.Monthly Science Current Event AssignmentFind one current science related article from a reputable newspaper, internet source, or scientific or news magazine. The article can be related to any area of science, such as life, physical, earth, or health sciences. You should begin your search for a current event at the beginning of each month and the article summary will be due at the end of the month. Due dates and project requirements are listed on the following pages. Assignment Guidelines:Typed (if possible, otherwise VERY neatly written)Times New Roman or Arial Font, size 12Include the MLA heading, a title and two paragraphs Double spaced (if typing)Use complete sentences and correct grammarArticle citation in MLA styleDouble check your spelling and your facts!*STAPLE a copy of the article to the back of your assignment.Detailed ProcedureChoose your current events article. The article should be at least two paragraphs long and have enough information to answer who, what, when, where, why, and how. In addition you will also need to form an opinion about the current event. If you can’t form an opinion on the topic, then the article is not a good choice. Cut out or print the article. The article should be stapled to your current events article summary. Articles cannot be older than three months from the day they are due unless I have approved it ahead of time. Ex: An October 18 current event due date cannot use an article older than July 18. Be sure to create a title that includes your article’s topic.Write a summary paragraph of the article using your own words. Your summary should include the main idea of the article and be elaborative and descriptive. Summaries should be a minimum of 10 sentences long. ****Answer the questions: who, what, when, where, why, how? Refer to graphic organizer.Write a second ‘opinion’ paragraph that is a minimum of 4-6 sentences long. Answer the following questions: Why did you choose the article? b.Was the article interesting to you?How did the article make you feel? Does what you read make you angry? sad? happy? annoyed? scared? Did you change your opinion after reading the article? What would you do to change the situation?If you get a D/F your parents will be notified and you will have one week to redo the assignment. 7.
