SCIENCE CURRENT EVENT ASSIGNMENT (15 points)

Science is a dynamic field of study where new discoveries, advances, and technologies are constantly being made. This year to help keep up on the science news, you will complete a current event assignment to connect our classroom and your studies to the “real world”. You will work in pairs to find a Science current event article, summarize the article and then present your article to the class.

1. Choose a current event article: one occurring within the last year, from a newspaper, magazine, or internet news site. Some good websites are:

2. Summarize your article: IN YOUR OWN WORDS and include the following information in your summary:

o Article info - Author, date of publication, title of the article, source name, web link or volume and/or page #’s.

o Summary - Who was involved and who will it affect? What has been done or discovered? How was it done or how will it be done? Where did it take place? When did it take place or when will it happen? Why is this important? Who/what could benefit from this? How does this relate to Chemistry?

o Your reaction – How do you feel about the topic and why? What do you think are the pro’s and con’s? What other research could be done on this topic? Was it easy to understand? Why or why not?

3. Present your article: You and your partner will sign up for a specific day to present your summary of your article to the class in 2-5 minutes. Make sure you speak clearly, you are creative and you show that you have thought deeply about your article.

You will be graded on the following things:

- Article printed or cut out, try and make this only half a page (1 points)

- Summary (10 points)

- Presentation (4 points)
