Course Description:

This elective course is a semester for students interested in practicing their role as a citizen in a democracy. Students in this course will learn skills needed to hold political discourse on the issues of today. They will investigate current issues individually and as a class. Students will develop skills to analyze issues, to discuss issues in a positive non-threatening way, and to find common ground for action with other citizens in our democracy. The finding of common ground for action will help students to formulate their beliefs about the direction public policy should take.

Topics:

➢ What is the purpose of government? What should it do? Not do?

➢ American Education System – How best to educate America’s students

➢ Environment/energy – Global warming: Fact or Fiction?

➢ American Healthcare – What should America do about its health care crisis?

➢ Foreign Policy – What is America’s role in the world?

➢ Economic issue

➢ Immigration – How should the US handle the immigration issue?

➢ “What is your issue?” – Individual student research issue presentations

Students will research, analyze, and evaluate each topic and as a group or class synthesize policy based on their research.

Grading:

HW – 25%

Papers/Projects/Portfolios – 75%
