Post: This post will be offered as a 12 month secondment

Grade: C1

Main purpose of role

To support the implementation of Scotland’s STEM Education and Training Strategy by contributing fully to Education Scotland’s national STEM programme and by leading Education Scotland’s STEM activity within Tayside Regional Improvement Collaborative.

Main duties

Provide support and build capacity

At a national level and within Tayside Regional Improvement Collaborative:

• Working with Education Scotland’s team of STEM Officers, develop, coordinate and deliver STEM professional learning, including subject-specific professional learning, to meet the needs of practitioners across a range of sectors and improve learning, teaching and assessment in STEM.

• Work closely with colleagues across Education Scotland’s Tayside Regional Improvement/Locality Team and within the Tayside Regional Improvement Collaborative to ensure effective support for STEM improvement.

• Lead the national roll out of Education Scotland’s STEM Nation Award Programme to a range of sectors including: early learning and childcare settings, primary, ASN, secondary schools and community learning and development.

• Support ongoing delivery of Education Scotland’s Enhancing Professional Learning in STEM Grants Programme with national partners and lead on the management of grants within Tayside Regional Improvement Collaborative.

• Ensure effective collaboration with the Young STEM Leader Programme managed by SSERC.

• Lead on the development, analysis and reporting of findings from Education Scotland’s annual STEM surveys and data gathering exercise.

• Promote equity and equality in all STEM activity with a particular emphasis on improving gender balance and equality.

Other duties

• Work in close partnership with Raising Aspirations in Science Education (RAiSE) Officers to ensure strong alignment of strategies and activities.

• Work with Education Scotland STEM colleagues to ensure ongoing development of the STEM Nation Online Resource and other web pages, including on the National Improvement Hub.

• Support ongoing development of the National e-Learning Offer including through facilitation of our national working groups.

• Liaise with STEM providers and partners, including SSERC, science centres and festivals, universities, and DYW Regional Groups to develop strong partnership working.

• Represent Education Scotland’s interests on the Dundee & Angus regional college STEM partnership and work alongside STEM Officers to support the work of the UHI STEM partnership.

• Liaise closely with Education Scotland’s Numeracy and Mathematics Team ensuring effective communication across areas of common interest including Applications of Mathematics.

• Build awareness of and engagement with new STEM pathways, including apprenticeship routes.

• Promote Education Scotland’s STEM programmes and activities through communications channels including social media.

• Identify and share good practice through online webinars, case studies, collaboration activities and networking events.

• Support the development of STEM leaders within establishments and clusters to promote whole setting and cluster approaches to STEM and to ensure all learners experience a high-quality STEM curriculum.

• Record engagement and professional learning activities to ensure reporting at a regional, organisational and national level.

• Undertake effective evaluation of professional learning and other relevant programmes to measure impact and ensure continual improvement.

• The post holder will be expected to undertake other tasks consistent with the post that may be required by the organisation.

Secure continuous improvement, personally and within Education Scotland

• Maintain a comprehensive knowledge and high-level awareness of current issues in education and contribute to recommendations on future strategic developments.

Qualifications, skills and experience

Essential criteria

• Proven track record in a management position within an education sector organisation.

• Able to demonstrate detailed knowledge of STEM learning.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence in dealing with a range of contacts.

• Previous experience of managing the progress and delivery of key education projects.
