SPEAKING NOTESOPENING REMARKS BY HON. JOHN-PETER AMEWU, MINISTER FOR LANDS AND NATURAL RESOURCES AT THE 2018 WEST AFRICA MINING AND POWER CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION (WAMPOC/WAMPEX)VENUE:ACCRA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTREDATE:WEDNESDAY, 30TH MAY, 2018Excellency, The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo; Current and Past Presidents of the Ghana Chamber of Mines; Executives and members of the Chamber;Captains of the Mining and Energy industries;Members of the Diplomatic Corp;Representatives of Ministries and Government Agencies;Members of Civil Society Organisations;Friends from the Media;Distinguished Invited Guests;Ladies and Gentlemen.INTRODUCTION:I am honoured to be part of this year’s West Africa Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition which seeks to bring industry experts together to share thoughts on and discuss topical issues impacting the mining and power industries across the West African sub-region and beyond. Over the years WAMPOC has established itself as one of the major Mining and Power Forums in Africa.I would like to commend the organizers and the Ghana Chamber of Mines for maintaining the momentum of the WAMPOC event. Let me take this opportunity also to welcome all participants especially those who have travelled far and beyond to participate in this important Conference.RELEVANCE OF THE CONFERENCE:Mining and Energy are two key sectors which play critical role in the economic development of resource-rich countries. Beyond both sectors being extractives, they share value chains which intertwine. Conference such as this is, therefore, relevant to offer investors and government the opportunity to discuss issues affecting the two sectors and to also develop existing business interests as well as promote new opportunities in the value chains of the two sectors in Africa for socio-economic development. THEME OF THE CONFERENCE & EMERGING ISSUES IN THE MINING INDUSTRY:I believe discussions during the Forum will extend beyond fiscal receipts and in line with the Africa Mining Partnership include local content, value addition, environmental responsiveness, transparency and accountability and resource-based industrialisation. I am, therefore, glad that the organizers have chosen a theme ‘‘A responsible and sustainable mining industry; a partner for national development’’ that reflects Government agenda of ensuring that mining is done in a way that would positively impact the socio-economic development of the people of Ghana. EXPECTATION OF THE CONFERENCE: With the consolidation of the industry following on the heels of the global commodity price downturn, may I with the permission of His Excellency, the President, state that Government is ready to work with investors to take advantage of the positive outlook of the industry. It is my expectation that this conference will come up with appropriate innovations and strategies to consolidate the gains of the mining industry for sustainable development. CONCLUSION: On behalf of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, I wish you all a successful conference. Thank You. ................
