Circulation ClerkHours Required: 12-28 hours per weekPay Basis: HourlyPay Scale: $12.00 - $19.23 per hourPosition Summary:Circulation Clerks perform a variety of library circulation and clerical procedures with a heavy concentration on public contact. Work involves responsibility for routine circulation, shelf maintenance and clerical functions using automated circulation system and well as office services for patrons and reference work. The job requires that the employee have some knowledge, skill and ability in library clerical functions, most of which are learned on the job.Supervision Received:Reports to the Director of Library Services, the Assistant Director of Library Services and the Youth Services Librarian/Coordinator.Works under the immediate supervision of the Assistant Director of Library Services.Job Qualifications:One year of undergraduate education and at least one year of clerical experience and public contact work preferred; high school diploma or G.E.D required.Knowledge of and interest in books, literature and popular culture.Knowledge of general library clerical methods and procedures including learning and use of the Dewey Decimal System.Ability to interact with and assist the public in a friendly and responsive manner.Extensive knowledge of computers and programs likely to be used in libraries, including familiarity with the internet, word processing, databases and social media applications.Good oral and written communication skills.Strong organizational and time management skills for a customer service oriented environment.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.Flexibility in work schedule; including evening and weekends.Essential Job Duties:Performs all circulation desk duties using an automated computer systemCheck materials in/out/renew materialsPlace holds on unavailable materials.Collect fines and replacement fees.Issues new patron cards/updates patron records.Performs all opening/closing procedures in work area/public areasTurn on/off all computers/copiers/printers as necessary.Turn on/off all lights/breakers/heating controls as necessary.Empty Book DropLock/unlock all doors as necessary.Notifies patrons of arrived holds by telephone.Ensures all spaces and shelves in adult/general sections of the library are clean, tidy and organized properly.Assures accurate shelving of materials daily and shelf reads assigned sections as asked.Assists patrons in finding desired materials within the library, with reader’s advisory and reference questions to patrons as the Circulation Desk. Defers reference questions to the appropriate department supervisors. Creates topical/seasonal displays for adult/general areas of the library.Answers phone and routes calls as necessary.Obtains Saturday mail and delivers interdepartmental mail as appropriate. Assists with library displays; registration of library programming; booklists and marketing material as assigned.Help decorate the library for seasonal celebrations.Receives interlibrary loan requests and requests for purchase from patrons.Accounts for register tallies at the end of each day using library accounting procedures.Assists patrons in a variety of office services including faxing, printing, copying, and notary services and does routine housekeeping and maintenance of office equipment including computers, printers and copiers.Displays professional conduct and appearance at all times while performing duties.Performs related work as required or assigned.Other Assignments:Serves on library teams as requested by the Director, Assistant Director or Youth Services Librarian/Coordinator.Performs special projects and other job related tasks that may be assigned by the Director, Assistant Director or Youth Services Librarian/Coordinator.Participates in professional organizations and workshops as assigned, and keeps informed of current trends in literature and pop culture.Physical Requirements:Ability to frequently see, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.Ability to lift, push, pull and transport equipment and furnishing not to exceed 35lbs.Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English.Dexterity to perform data entry on a computer, laptop, iPad, or other electronic device.Visual acuity sufficient to read print in 8 point font.Work Environment:Majority of the work performed in a general office/library environment.Requires availability for extended or nontraditional hours as needed to perform job duties.Requires periodic participation and attendance at related library events and training workshops.Disclaimer:The information in this summary indicates the general nature and level of work performed within this role.
