2004 NAD Offering Appeal

“Stewards of God’s Glory”

Dear Pastor:

The 2004 offering readings have been written with much prayer for guidance from the Lord and with the prayer that they may be a manifold blessing to you, to church leaders and to the membership. The format is simple: (1) Scripture text, (2) Read-ings and comments (use part or all), (3) Appeal, and (4) Prayer.

The theme that I have chosen for 2004 is “STEWARDS OF GOD’S GLORY”. Four areas touching on man’s stewardship of God’s glory, as listed below, set the basis for all of the 2004 readings.

1. Stewards of God’s Glory

2. Stewards of God’s Temple Glory

3. Stewards of God’s Dominion Glory

4. Glory Lost and Regained

It is the purpose of the 2004 offering readings to bring our members a reminder that God has blessed humanity with a splendor above all others – that of being stewards of His glory in their being and in their dominion over all of the works of God in this world.

These readings are designed to retrace the creation of man, his sin in Eden, the subsequent promise and coming of the Redeemer, and earth’s end-time with the Remnant Church showing forth the Glory of God in message and in witness. They are designed to challenge those hearing them to higher Christian living, and to become faithful stewards in all that God has entrusted into their hands.

In Christ Jesus,

Alfred G. Kromminga, D.Min.

The Personal Giving Plan (PGP)*

The Personal Giving Plan (PGP) has been introduced to much of the North American Division as a suggested systematic stewardship plan. The following material has been prepared as a guideline to refresh the PGP concepts so that new materials can be prepared for pastors and members. Accordingly, this is not a new program but rather an enhancement of the original PGP with a goal of educating the NAD church family. We hope the following explanation will give a better understanding regarding the Personal Giving Plan.

System and Simplicity

The PGP organizes nearly all church financial support into five areas with the following suggested percentages for the offerings given:

a. Tithe - 10% to support the gospel ministry of the world church.

b. Local Church Budget - 5% to support local church mission, ministry and physical plant.

c. Conference Advance Budget – 2% to support the non-tithe projects of the Local Conference. This usually includes Secondary Education (Academies), Evangelism, Youth Camp, etc.

d. World Budget – 3% to maintain and expand the missionary outreach of the World Church.

e. Special Projects and miscellaneous offering – percentage and offerings are discretionary to the individual giver. This may include offerings for the local church as well as offerings for other conference and world church ministries.

Planned giving brings all offerings together in an overall plan for systematic benevolence, and can be thought of as a three step process:

Step 1 – Return God’s tithe

Step 2 – Give an offering as God has prospered

Step 3 – Distribute the offering proportionately

Each member is urged to give according to his ability and to God’s blessing (Deuteronomy 16:17), and as a part of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12).

“Stewards of God’s Glory”

Date: January 3, 2004 Offering: Local Church Budget

The Glory of a New Beginning

“`What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:4-5 NIV

“All heaven took a deep and joyful interest in the creation of the world and man. Human beings were a new and distinct order. They were made in the image of God,” and it was the Creator’s design that they should populate the earth. They were to live in close communion with heaven, receiving power from the Source of all power. Upheld by God, they were to live sinless lives.” R.H. Feb. 1l, 1902

“God created man a superior being; he alone is formed in the image of God, and is capable of partaking of the divine nature, of cooperating with the Creator and executing His plans.” R.H. April 21,1885.

“The sinless pair wore no artificial garments; they were clothed with a covering of light and glory, such as the angels wear. So long as they lived in obedience to God, this robe of light continued to enshroud “them. DG 22

Appeal: Our offering for today is for LOCAL CHURCH BUDGET, which includes operating expenses such as Sabbath School, Outreach, Evangelism, Youth Ministries, Utilities, and Community Services. Let us glorify God in returning the tithes and offerings.

“Stewards of God’s Glory”

Date: January 10 Offering: Southern New England Advance

The offering focus today is on the Conference’s Worthy Student Funds. Monies from this fund, along with grants from students’ churches and schools, are distributed to proved Three-Way Aid to academy and college students in need.

“Children are a gift from the Lord” [Ps. 127:3, NLT]. “Nothing is of greater importance” than their education [CT 165], Ellen White declared. Parents are counseled to “make every effort” in their power to place their children in the most favorable environment for developing a Christ-like character [CT 156]. Young people are to observe individuals who love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and strength. They are to hear the Lord’s commands again and again [Deut 6:5-7]. “In the highest sense the work of education and the work of redemption are one” [Ed 30].

Seventh-day Adventist schools supplement the character education begun in the home [FE288]. Teachers help students to become friends of the Lord and learn “obedience to God’s will . . . “ [CT 205}. White says that “one of the reasons why church schools should be established” is to try to “save” “children whom parents have neglected to educate and discipline” [CT 153]

“As far as possible, all our children, should have the privilege of a Christian education” [CT 158]. Individuals and churches “must make more liberal efforts for the training of our young people. . . “ [ 6T 206] “if there are some who should have the benefit of the school, but who cannot pay full price for their tuition, let the churches show their liberality by helping them” [6T 213].

Appeal: Our offering today is for Southern New England Advance. The ministry we are highlighting is CHRISTIAN EDUCATION and our privilege to help young students to be there through the Worthy Student 3-Way Plan. Thank God for our children and our schools.

Stewards of Material Glory

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over the creatures that move along the ground.’” Genesis 1:26 NIV

“God’s character was revealed in the character of Adam. His glory was revealed in every object of nature.” AH 26

“Adam was crowned king in Eden. To him was given dominion over every living thing that God had created. The Lord blessed Adam and Eve with intelligence such as He had not given to any other creature. He made Adam the rightful sovereign over all the works of His hands. Man, made in the divine image, could contemplate and appreciate the glorious works of God in nature.”

1BC 1082

To man was given the glorious privilege of dominion over all of the earth. In it could be seen the glory of the character and love of God. The bounties of the earth, including the mineral, the vegetable, and the animal, are all a trust placed into our hands. God asks that we care for them, use them wisely, and give an account for them to Him.

“Everyone has heard of Heinz, whose fifty-seven varieties have satisfied the hunger of millions. But few know that Mr. Heinz was a soul winner. At a revival meeting one day the minister turned to him suddenly and said, “You’re a Christian man. Why don’t you get up and get busy for Christ?” Mr. Heinz went home in anger. He went to bed, but couldn’t sleep. At four o’clock in the morning he got down on his knees and asked God to make him a power for Him. Then he went to sleep.

Soon after this he attended a meeting of bank presidents. Turning to the man next to him, he spoke of the Christian life. The man looked at him in amazement and said, “I’ve wondered many times why you have never spoken to me about Christ if you really believe in Him.”

That man was the first of 267 souls that Mr. Heinz won to Christ from that time onward to the end of his life.

And that’s our business in this interim world- winning citizens for the next.” – By H.M.S. Richards, Our Times, July 1951

Appeal: Our appeal today is for Local Church Outreach/Evangelism. Let us take the opportunity to share and not squander those encounters God provides us to share Him with those He places in our pathway. Give today so that others may know and accept the gospel story.

The Glory That was Adam’s

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis1 27 NIV

“When Adam came from the Creator’s hand, he bore, in his physical, mental, and spiritual nature, a likeness to his Maker. ‘God created man in His own image’ (Genesis 1:27), and it was His purpose that the longer man lived the more fully he should reveal this image—the more fully reflect the glory of the Creator. All his faculties were capable of development; their capacity and vigor were continually to increase. Vast was the scope offered for their exercise, glorious the field opened to their research. The mysteries of the visible universe—the ‘wondrous works of Him which is perfect in knowledge’ (Job 37:16)—invited man’s study. Face-to-face, heart-to-heart communion with his Maker was his high privilege. Had he remained loyal to God, all this would have been his forever. Throughout eternal ages he would have continued to gain new treasures of knowledge, to discover fresh springs of happiness, and to obtain clearer and yet clearer conceptions of the wisdom, the power, and the love of God. More and more fully would he have fulfilled the object of his creation, more and more fully have reflected the Creator’s glory.” {Ed 15.1}

“And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7

“Man was the crowning act of the creation of God, made in the image of God, and designed to be a counterpart of God. . . . Man is very dear to God, because he was formed in His own image.” ML 126

“In the Genesis narrative, the concept ‘image of God’ appears at the consummation of all creation. At each stage of progress, Genesis notes punctiliously, God looks back on His creation and pronounces it ‘good.’ But creation still lacks a creature to contain God’s own image. . . . Among all God’s creatures, only humanity receives the image of God, and that quality separates us from all else.” In His Image, Paul Brand & Philip Yancy, pp. 20, 21.

“One of the supreme artists of history rendered the Creation sequence on the vaulted stone ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Michelangelo chose as the centerpiece of his great work the precise moment when God awakened man into His image.” Ibid. p 21

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 NIV

“In the creation of man was manifest the agency of a personal God. When God had made man in His image, the human form was perfect in all its arrangements, but it was without life. Then a personal, self-existing God breathed into that form the breath of life, and man became a living, intelligent being. All parts of the human organism were set in action. The heart, the arteries, the veins, the tongue, the hands, the feet, the senses, the faculties of the mind, all began their work, and all were placed under law. Man became a living soul. Through Christ the Word, a personal God created man and endowed him with intelligence and power.” MH 415

“Created to be ‘the image and glory of God,’ Adam and Eve had received endowments not unworthy of their high destiny. Graceful and symmetrical in form, regular and beautiful in feature, their countenances glowing with the tint of health and the light of joy and hope, they bore in outward resemblance the likeness of their Maker.” ML 126

The Australian Lumberman

“I think of the Australian lumberman who built a little cabin at the edge of the woods. One evening as he returned from work, and a horrible scene met his sight. A forest fire had swept through and destroyed his little home. Only a smoking heap remained.

He wandered out to where the old chicken coop had stood. It too was a mass of ashes and burned wire. At his feet lay a mound of charred feathers. He idly kicked it over. And what do you suppose happened? Four little fuzzy babies scrambled out. Four little chicks survived, sheltered by their mother’s love.

Friend, do you want to be covered when fire sweeps through this planet? You can be sheltered in your Savior now.” – by George Vandeman, Signs of the Times, January 1989.

Are there those you know who are unsheltered by the Savior? If so, the fires of judgment will not spare them unless His wings of grace cover them.

When God says, “Come”, He goes out to meet us; when He says “Go”, He goes with us.” By A. E. Lawrence, Signs of the Times, July 28, 1909.

Appeal: Our offering today is for Southern New England Advance. The ministry we are highlighting is Conference EVANGELISM and our privilege to help fund a finished work in this generation. Thank God for His work in the lives of so very many people right now.

Crowned King Over Planet Earth

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule . . . over all the earth, . . .” Genesis 1:26 NIV

“Adam was crowned king in Eden. To him was given dominion over every living thing that God had created. The Lord blessed Adam and Eve with intelligence such as He had not given to any other creature. He made Adam the rightful sovereign over all the works of His hands. Man, made in the divine image, could contemplate and appreciate the glorious works of God in nature (Redemption; or the Temptation of Christ, p. 7).” 1BC 1082.2

“Adam was surrounded with everything his heart could wish. Every want was supplied. There was no sin, and no signs of decay in glorious Eden. Angels of God conversed freely and lovingly with the holy pair. The happy songsters caroled forth their free, joyous songs of praise to their Creator. The peaceful beasts in happy innocence played about Adam and Eve, obedient to their word. Adam was in the perfection of manhood, the noblest of the Creator’s work. He was in the image of God, but a little lower than the angels.” 1SM 268

Stewards of a Perfect Home

“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! . . . what is man that you are mindful of him? You made him ruler over all the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: . . .” Psalm 8: 1, 4, 6 NIV

“The book of nature, which spread its living lessons before them, afforded an exhaustless source of instruction and delight. On every leaf of the forest and stone of the mountains, in every shining star, in earth and sea and sky, God’s name was written. With both the animate and the inanimate creation—with leaf and flower and tree, and with every living creature, from the leviathan of the waters to the mote in the sunbeam—the dwellers in Eden held converse, gathering from each the secrets of its life. God’s glory in the heavens, the innumerable worlds in their orderly revolutions, ‘the balancings of the clouds’ (Job 37:16), the mysteries of light and sound, of day and night—all were objects of study by the pupils of earth’s first school.” Ed 21

Appeal: Today’s offering is for our World Budget. The ministry that we are highlighting is ADVENTIST WORLD RADIO that presents the Gospel in more than 55 languages during about 1,200 hours every week. Two recent new broadcasts are the Middle East and Europe. One writer from China said, “I found [the Voice of Hope} station and the wonderful voice that I heard thrilled me to my toes! It seemed that I had suddenly found a long-lost friend. Thank God for your dear station.”

Stewards with a Purpose in Life

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15 NIV

“Adam had themes for contemplation in the works of God in Eden, which was heaven in miniature. God did not form man merely to contemplate His glorious works; therefore, He gave him hands for labor, as well as a mind and heart for contemplation. If the happiness of man consisted in doing nothing, the Creator would not have given Adam his appointed work. Man was to find happiness in labor, as well as in meditation.” 1BC 1082

“To Adam was given the work of caring for the garden. The Creator knew that Adam could not be happy without employment. The beauty of the garden delighted him, but this was not enough. He must have labor to call into exercise the wonderful organs of the body. Had happiness consisted in doing nothing, man, in his state of holy innocence, would have been left unemployed. But He who created man knew what would be for his happiness; and no sooner had He created him than He gave him his appointed work. The promise of future glory, and the decree that man must toil for his daily bread, came from the same throne.” AH 27

The Southern New England Conference has a vital ministry-a ministry that we cannot afford to ignore. This ministry is our your summer camp program. Great Value is placed on what Camp Winnekeag has to offer, however, this value cannot measured in financial terms. It can only be measured in lasting spiritual terms.

Seven hundred and twenty-three campers attended Winnekeag during our ten weeks of summer camps. The seventy staff and thirty staff-in-training shared the love of Jesus and the story of His love all summer.

The goal of our youth summer camp program is to introduce children and youth to Jesus while they are still young and impressionable. By using the Bible and nature, spiritual lessons are taught. Camp Winnekeag offers a relaxed, natural environment where children and youth can come for wholesome outdoor recreation within a Christian context. As you support Camp Winnekeag in a tangible way, please pray that God will continue to bless the ministry of our youth camp where young people can discover their own relationship with God.

Appeal: Our offering today is for Southern New England Advance. The ministry we are highlighting is CAMP WINNEKEAG and our privilege to help this generation of youth find their way to God’s Spiritual Kingdom. Thank God for our beautiful camp, our Youth Ministries leaders and our youth.

A Temple in Need of Repair

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans12:2 NIV

“Men have polluted the soul temple, and God calls upon them to awake, and to strive with all their might to win back their God-given manhood. Nothing but the grace of God can convict and convert the heart; from Him alone can the slaves of custom obtain power to break the shackles that bind them. It is impossible for a man to present his body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, while continuing to indulge habits that are depriving him of physical, mental, and moral vigor.” CD 119

“The knowledge that man is to be a temple for God, a habitation for the revealing of His glory, should be the highest incentive to the care and development of our physical powers. Fearfully and wonderfully has the Creator wrought in the human frame, and He bids us make it our study, understand its needs, and act our part in preserving it from harm and defilement.” FLB 227

Offering A Fit Sacrifice

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1 NIV

“God requires the body to be rendered a living sacrifice to him, not a dead or a dying sacrifice. The offerings of the ancient Hebrews were to be without blemish, and will it be pleasing to God to accept a human offering that is filled with disease and corruption? He tells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost; and he requires us to take care of this temple, that it may be a fit habitation for his Spirit. . . . All should be very careful to preserve the body in the best condition of health that they may render to God perfect service, and do their duty in the family and in society.” {CTBH 52.3}

‘The sacred temple of the body must be kept pure and uncontaminated, that God’s Holy Spirit may dwell therein. We need to guard faithfully the Lord’s property, for any abuse of our powers shortens the time that our lives could be used for the glory of God. Bear in mind that we must consecrate all—soul, body, and spirit—to God” ML 134

They read Isaiah 53 and talked about Abraham being willing to offer his own son and what it represented. The man said he would go home and study and be back next week for more discussion.

A woman who had come on the van the week before and heard about the importance of drinking sufficient water each day had done so during the week. At the time of this visit, her blood pressure was normal.

“Through the power of Christ, men and women have broken the chains of sinful habit. They have renounced selfishness. The profane have become reverent, the drunken sober, the profligate pure. Souls that have borne the likeness of Satan have become transformed into the image of God. This change is in itself the miracle of miracles. Temples Glorifying the Lord

“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:20 KJV

“Our first duty toward God and our fellow beings is that of self-development. Every faculty with which the Creator has endowed us should be cultivated to the highest degree of perfection, that we may be able to do the greatest amount of good which we are capable. Hence that time is spent to good account which is directed to the establishment and preservation of sound physical and mental health.

Man is God’s workmanship, His masterpiece, created for a high and holy purpose; and on every part of the human tabernacle God desires to write His law. . . . Every nerve and muscle, every mental and physical endowment, is to be kept pure.

God designs that the body shall be as a temple for His Spirit. Solemn is the accountability resting upon every soul. Your individual influence is exercised for good or for evil. If you defile your body, you are not only doing harm to yourself, but to many others.” SD 313

Earthen Vessels of Glory

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay [KJV “earthen vessels”] to show this all-surpassing power is from God. . . . For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body.” 2 Corinthians 4:7, 11 NIV

“God could have proclaimed His truth through sinless angels, but this is not His plan. He chooses human beings, men compassed with infirmity, as instruments in the working out of His designs. The priceless treasure is placed in earthen vessels. Through men His blessings are to be conveyed to the world. Through them His glory is to shine forth into the darkness of sin. In loving ministry they are to meet the sinful and the needy, and lead them to the cross. “It is the fragrance of our love for our fellow men that reveals our love for God. It is patience in service that brings rest to the soul. It is through humble, diligent, faithful toil that the welfare of Israel is promoted. God upholds and strengthens the one who is willing to follow in Christ’s way.” AA 560

And in all their work they are to ascribe glory, honor, and praise to Him who is above all and over all.” AA 330

Consecration of the Temple

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? 1 Corinthians 6:19 NIV

“The greatest praise that men can bring to God is to become consecrated channels through whom He can work. Time is rapidly passing into eternity. Let us not keep back from God that which is His own. Let us not refuse Him that which, though it cannot be given with merit, cannot be denied without ruin. He asks for a whole heart; give it to Him; it is His, both by creation and by redemption. He asks for your intellect; give it to Him; it is His. He asks for your money; give it to Him; it is His. “Ye are not your own, for ye are bought with a price.” 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20. God requires the homage of a sanctified soul, which has prepared itself, by the exercise of the faith that works by love, to serve Him. He holds up before us the highest ideal, even perfection. He asks us to be absolutely and completely for Him in this world as He is for us in the presence of God.” AA 566

Meeting With the Lord of Glory

“Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifice; and the glory of the Lord filled the house.” 2 Chronicles 7:1 KJV

“As Solomon ended his prayer, ‘fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices.’ The priests could not enter the temple because ‘the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord’s house.’ ‘When all the children of Israel saw . . . the glory of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshiped, and praised the Lord, saying, For He is good; for His mercy endureth forever.’” PK 45

“Although God dwells not in temples made with hands, yet He honors with His presence the assemblies of His people. He has promised that when they come together to seek Him, to acknowledge their sins, and to pray for one another, He will meet with them by His Spirit. . . . ‘The Lord is in His holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him.’ Habakkuk 2:20.” PK 50

“As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name . . . when he comes and prays toward this temple, then hear from heaven . . .” 1 Kings 8:41-43 NIV

“One of the most touching portions of Solomon’s dedicatory prayer was his plea to God for the strangers that should come from countries afar to learn more of Him whose fame had been spread abroad among the nations. ‘They shall hear,’ the king pleaded, ‘of Thy great name, and of Thy strong hand, and of Thy stretched-out arm.’ In behalf of every one of these stranger worshipers Solomon had petitioned: ‘Hear Thou, . . . and do according to all that the stranger calleth to Thee for: that all people of the earth may know Thy name, to fear Thee, as do Thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by Thy name.’” [1 Kings 8:41-43] PK 66

“At the close of the service, Solomon had exhorted Israel to be faithful and true to God, in order that ‘all the people of the earth may know,’ he said, ‘that the Lord is God, and that there is none else.’” [1 Kings 8:60] PK 66

A Temple of Glorious Beauty

“Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. . . . and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.” Exodus 40:34, 35 NIV

“No language can describe the glory of the scene presented within the sanctuary—the gold-plated walls reflecting the light from the golden candlestick, the brilliant hues of the richly embroidered curtains with their shining angels, the table, and the altar of incense, glittering with gold; beyond the second veil the sacred ark, with its mystic cherubim, and above it the holy Shekinah, the visible manifestation of Jehovah’s presence; all but a dim reflection of the glories of the temple of God in heaven, the great center of the work for man’s redemption.” PP 349

“The care shown in the building of the temple is a lesson to us regarding the care that we are to show in our character-building. No cheap material was to be used. No haphazard work was to be done in matching the different parts. Piece must fit piece perfectly. Just as God’s temple was, so must His church be. Into their character-building His people are to bring no worthless timbers, no careless, indifferent work. . . .” 2BC 1030

Ministering to the Sick

“The righteous will answer him, ‘Lord . . . When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’” Matthew 25:37, 39 NIV

“The tender sympathies of our Saviour were aroused for fallen and suffering humanity. If you would be His followers, you must cultivate compassion and sympathy. Indifference to human woes must give place to lively interest in the sufferings of others. The widow, the orphan, the sick and the dying, will always need help. Here is an opportunity to proclaim the gospel—to hold up Jesus, the hope and consolation of all men. When the suffering body has been relieved, and you have shown a lively interest in the afflicted, the heart is opened, and you can pour in the heavenly balm. If you are looking to Jesus and drawing from Him knowledge and strength and grace, you can impart His consolation to others, because the Comforter is with you.” CH 34

In hospitals, in prisons, in the military, in educational institutions, and in many other walks of life, there is a need for chaplains who can minister to both the physical and the spiritual needs of people.

Appeal: Today’s offering is for our World Budget. The ministry that we are highlighting is ADVENTIST CHAPLAINCY MINISTRIES, which serves as the official endorsing agency for chaplains serving in health care facilities, correctional institutions, secular and denominational schools, as well as in the military and Veterans Administration. This offering is only taken once every other year.

The Light of God’s Glory

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. . . . Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” Isaiah 60:1, 3 NIV

“In the service of God there is work of many kinds to be performed. In the service of the temple there were hewers of wood, as well as priests of various orders bearing various degrees of responsibility. Our church members are to arise and shine because their light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon them. Let those who know the truth arouse out of sleep, and make every effort to reach the people where they are. The work of the Lord must no longer be neglected by us, and made secondary to worldly interests. We have no time to be idle or discouraged. The gospel is to be proclaimed to all the world.” CM 16.4

“Christ does not bid His followers strive to shine. He says, Let your light shine. If you have received the grace of God, the light is in you. Remove the obstructions, and the Lord’s glory will be revealed. The light will shine forth to penetrate and dispel the darkness. You cannot help shining within the range of your influence.” COL 420

“An aged sister in a Jamaica church was noted for her sweet, sunny disposition and cheerful character. She was punctual at every service; and whenever an opportunity was offered for those present to speak of the love and goodness of Jesus, she would always, in her testimony, say, “I do thank God for the showers of blessings that He sends me every day.”

On one occasion, at the close of a meeting where she had with more than usual emphasis and earnestness spoken of “the showers of daily blessings,” a younger and perhaps less confident sister said to her, “But, mother, are there no storms in your life, and do no clouds ever rise and shut out the sunshine from your soul?”

With a sweet, saintly smile, she replied: “Storms and clouds, did you say, child? Why, bless your heart, dear, there are very many of them, and they come almost every day, but thank God, every one of them brings me showers of blessings.” – By J.A. Strickland, Signs of the Times, February 19, 1918

Are you blessed? Have you experienced showers of blessings?

Appeal: Today’s offering is for SNEC Community Service. Remember, it’s been said, “We live by dying to ourselves; we die by living to ourselves.” – Unknown, Signs of the Times, January 15, 1918.

Date: July 31, 2004 Offering: Southern New England Advance

The Fullness of His Glory is Touching

"Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite” (Matthew 22:9 NKJV)

Our Conference Health Ministry Van is on the streets of Boston and other selected communities----touching lives.

A young woman came to have her blood pressure taken. It was perfect. She was following good health habits but said she wished she could understand the Bible better. She signed up for Bible studies.

Some people ask, "Who is sponsoring this van work?" When we tell them, some ask, "Who are the Seventh-day Adventists, and what do they believer?" Their hearts are touched that we care.

A woman came on the van and said, "It's been a year since I stopped drinking alcohol, thanks to a John." John is a faithful van worker.

A man came on the van and mentioned that by changing his diet he was able to lose fifty pounds in six months. There is health literature available on the van.

Appeal: Our offering for today is for Southern New England Advance and we are highlighting our BOSTON VAN HEALTH OUTREACH—truly a life-changing ministry.

Christ Our Righteousness

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteous of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV

“Through His sacrifice, human beings may reach the high ideal set before them, and hear at last the words, ‘Ye are complete in him,’ not having your own righteousness, but the righteousness that He wrought out for you. Your imperfection is no longer seen; for you are clothed with the robe of Christ’s perfection (MS 125, 1902).” 7BC 907

“Our Substitute and Surety passed over the ground where Adam stumbled and fell. And the question was, Will He stumble and fall as Adam did over God’s commandments? He met Satan’s attacks again and again with, “It is written,” and Satan left the field of conflict a conquered foe. Christ has redeemed Adam’s disgraceful fall, and has perfected a character of perfect obedience, and left an example for the human family, that they may imitate the Pattern. Had He failed on one point in reference to the law of God, He would not have been a perfect offering; for it was on one point only that Adam failed (RH June 10, 1890).” 5BC 1080

Witnesses of Righteousness

“The nations will see your righteousness, and the kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.” Isaiah 62:2 NIV

“In all our school work we need to have a correct understanding of what the essential education is. Men talk much of higher education, but who can define what the higher education is? The highest education is found in the word of the living God. That education which teaches us to submit our souls to God in all humility, and which enables us to take the word of God and believe just what it says, is the education that is most needed. With this education we shall see of the salvation of God. With the Spirit of God upon us, we are to carry the light of truth into the highways and the byways, that the salvation of God may be revealed in a remarkable manner.” FE 532

“To restore in man the image of his Maker, to bring him back to the perfection in which he was created, to promote the development of body, mind, and soul, that the divine purpose of creation might be realized—this was to be the work of redemption. This is the object of education, the great object of life.” Ed. pp 15-16.

Appeal: Today’s offering is for our World Budget. The ministry that we are highlighting is ANDREWS UNIVERSITY, LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY, and OAKWOOD COLLEGE where many of our members receive their education, many of whom now serve or will serve in the work of the church.

“Stewards of God’s Glory”

Date: August 21, 2004 Offering: Local Church Evangelism

The artist and cartoonist Thomas Nast used to perform an interesting feat. He would take a canvas six feet long by two feet wide and place it horizontally on an easel before his audience. Working quickly, he’d sketch in a landscape: green meadows with cattle, fields of grain, a farmhouse, bright sky, fleecy clouds – a typical pastoral scene. And he’d step aside to the audience’s applause.

Then Nast would begin to dab in a few dark colors, as if touching up the painting. But soon his strokes appeared reckless. He’d blot out the bright sky, the fields, and the meadow. When dark slashes of paint had obliterated the whole composition, making it look like something angry and abstract, Nast would step back and declare, “It’s finished.”

Typically, the audience wouldn’t know how to respond. Should they applaud, or should they weep? But Nast would ask the stagehands to turn the canvas to a vertical position. And suddenly there’d appear a painting of a spectacular waterfall plunging over a cliff of dark rock bordered by shrubs and trees – a stunning composition.

The picture of the end times can look quite scary. It can look quite chaotic. All those woes poured out, those trumpets of doom blasting, those plagues devastating the earth. The end of the world can seem to be a series of dark-colored slashes on the canvas of prophecy.

But Jesus turns the picture right side up. He turns the whole planet right side up! Jesus standing tall as the Alpha and the Omega, as the Bright and Morning Star, as the leader of the armies of heaven coming to the rescue.” – By Mark Finley, Signs of the Times, March 1995

Appeal: Will we allow Jesus to use us to turn the picture right side up for those currently lost in our world? The offering today is for Local Church Evangelism. Henry Ward Beecher once said, “A man has no more religion than he acts out in his life.” How does your picture of Him look to those around you?

Camp Pictures

The name Camp Winnekeag brings smiles to many faces as campers remember the lake and mental pictures of camp adventures – the stories of how Jesus has worked in the lives of the staff, the campfire songs, the wooded trails or watching the moonrise over the lake! (Some of these, now adult campers, return with their families for Family Camp.)

Whatever your picture, Camp Winnekeage offers all this and more. Each day at camp a different picture is drawn, a different experience takes place, and memories are made.

Often, these memories inspire campers to become staff members who share with others the joys they have received. Then they tell stories of Jesus’ love, God’s grace, and challenge others to accept Jesus as a personal Savior. The cycle continues as campers and staff mature and grow in Christ. As you support Camp Winnekeag and its ministry, please pray for each camper and staff member to continue to grow closer to Jesus

The Salt of the Earth

“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” Matthew 5:13 NIV

“In the ritual service, salt was added to every sacrifice. This, like the offering of incense, signified that only the righteousness of Christ could make the service acceptable to God. Referring to this practice, Jesus said, ‘Every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.’ ‘Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.’ All who would present themselves ‘a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God’ (Rom. 12:1), must receive the saving salt, the righteousness of our Saviour. Then they become ‘the salt of the earth’ restraining evil among men, as salt preserves from corruption. Matt. 5:13. But if the salt has lost its savor; if there is only a profession of godliness, without the love of Christ, there is no power for good. The life can exert no saving influence upon the world. Your energy and efficiency in the upbuilding of My kingdom, Jesus says, depend upon your receiving of My Spirit. You must be partakers of My grace, in order to be a savor of life unto life. “DA 439

“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” John 17:22-23 NIV

“We are to be brought into a sacred nearness with the world's Redeemer. We are to be one with Christ as He is one with the Father. What a wonderful change the people of God experience in coming into unity with the Son of God! We are to have our tastes, inclinations, ambitions, and passions all subdued, and brought into harmony with the mind and spirit of Christ. This is the very work that the Lord is willing to do for those who believe in Him. Our life and deportment are to have a molding power in the world. Called to Glory

“What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance of his glory—even us, whom he called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?” Romans 9:23-24 NIV

“It was God's purpose that His grace should be revealed among the Gentiles as well as among the Israelites. This had been plainly outlined in Old Testament prophecies. The apostle uses some of these prophecies in his argument. ‘Hath not the potter power over the clay,’ he inquires, ‘of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor? What if God, willing to show His wrath, and to make His power known, endured with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had afore prepared unto glory, even us, whom He hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?’” AA 376

Date: September 25, 2004 Offering: SNEC Secondary Education

Two Academies—Schools of the Prophets

“... and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (Luke 10:27)

In recent months, the North American Division’s Office of Education released a major document entitled, “Journey to Excellence.” Within this document, one of the major components that integrates itself within the school’s curriculum, is the concept of “service”.

In the book “Education”, Ellen White states that the teacher should not be content with imparting only technical knowledge, but also needs to inspire the students with “principles that will make them a positive force for the stability and uplifting of society. He desires them, above all else, to learn life’s great lesson of unselfish service.” (Education pgs. 29, 30.)

Both academies in our conference are to be commended for integrating the principles of “service” within their school program on a regular basis, whereby the young people are able to reach out and bless others within their communities.

Our offering today is to benefit secondary education where our young people are not only receiving a quality Christian education, but continue to have opportunities to show love to their neighbors through a planned program of unselfish service.

Appeal: Our offering today is for the two Christian high schools in our Conference—GBA & SLA. Please pray that the Lord will pour out immense blessings upon our schools that they will have the Lord’s guidance in preparing our youth to be productive citizens here and for citizenship in God’s Spiritual Kingdom here and eternally.

The Spirit of Truth

“If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. . . . you will know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:15-17

“Jesus promised His disciples, ‘The Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.’ ‘When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: . . . and He will show you things to come.’ John 14:26; 16:13. Scripture plainly teaches that these promises, so far from being limited to apostolic days, extend to the church of Christ in all ages. The Saviour assures His followers, ‘I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.’ Matthew 28:20. And Paul declares that the gifts and manifestations of the Spirit were set in the church ‘for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.’ Ephesians 4:12, 13.” GC viii-ix.

A Voice in the Wilderness

“The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. . . . And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.” Isaiah 40: 3,5 KJV

“John was called to do a special work; he was to prepare the way of the Lord, to make straight His paths. . . . He was called to do a special work. The Lord gave him his message. He was the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. . . . and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it’ (Isa. 40:3-5). This is the very message that must be given to our people; we are near the end of time, and the message is, Clear the King's highway; gather out the stones; raise up a standard for the people. The people must be awakened. It is no time now to cry peace and safety. We are exhorted to ‘cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins’ (Isa. 5:1).” 1SM 410

Appeal: Today’s offering is for our World Budget. The ministry that we are highlighting is VOICE OF PROPHECY. The VOP radio, Bible school, and evangelistic ministries have presented the Gospel message for over 70 years. It’s ministry has increased from one radio station to over 1,500 radio stations, including Adventist World Radio shortwave whose signals reach nearly every country on earth.

“A preacher had been told by the head of a great shoe factory, that if he found any poor people who needed shoes, he could come to him and get them. In making his rounds one day soon afterward, the minister invited a man to attend his church.

“I would like to go,” said the man, “but my shoes are so nearly worn out that I would be ashamed to go to meeting with them, and I am too poor to get any better.”

“Well, that shall not keep you away,” said the preacher; “I will get you a pair of shoes if you will come.”

“But I couldn’t go without my wife,” returned the man, “and her shoes are no better than mine.” The preacher promised to get the shoes for her, too.

“It would hardly be right to leave our three children at home, and they are all barefooted too,” said the man in a hesitating way.

The preacher saw that he was in for it, and promised that the children should also have shoes. He then got their measures and went to see his friend the shoe man. He feared that he was presuming too much on the promise he had received, and thought the shoe man might feel that he was abusing his kindness, but when the situation was laid before him, the merchant smiled and said: “All right; come with me.”

Together they took the elevator and went to one of the upper floors, where they landed in a large room that was filled with shoes. The shoe man point to one whole side of the room and said: “All the shoes on these shelves are set aside for just such cases as yours, and when you have any more of the same kind just come here and help yourself.” –Unknown, Signs of the Times, April 10, 1907

The Glory of Giving

“And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 NIV

“Whenever God's people, in any period of the world, have cheerfully and willingly carried out His plan in systematic benevolence and in gifts and offerings, they have realized the standing promise that prosperity should attend all their labors just in proportion as they obeyed His requirements. When they acknowledged the claims of God, and complied with His requirements, honoring Him with their substance, their barns were filled with plenty.” 3T 395.

“The offerings of the poor, given through self-denial to aid in extending the precious light of saving truth, will not only be a sweet-smelling savor to God, and wholly acceptable to Him as a consecrated gift, but the very act of giving expands the heart of the giver, and unites him more fully to the Redeemer of the world. --R. & H., Oct. 31, 1878.” CS 347.3

The Hope of Glory

“[T]he mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of Glory.” Colossians 1:26-27 NIV

“In Christ dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead. But the only way in which He could reach men was to veil His glory by a garb of humanity. The angels beheld the hiding of His glory, that divinity might touch humanity. Christ ever retained the utmost hatred for sin, but He loved the purchase of His blood. He suffered in the place of sinful men, taking them into union with Himself.

This is the mystery into which angels desire to look. They desire to know how Christ could live and work in a fallen world, how He could mingle with sinful humanity. It was a mystery to them that He who hated sin with intense hatred felt the most tender, compassionate sympathy for the beings that committed sin (ST Jan. 20, 1898).” 7BC 904

Boasting in the Cross of Christ

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Galatians 6:14 NIV

“Without the cross, man could have no union with the Father. On it depends our every hope. From it shines the light of the Saviour's love, and when at the foot of the cross the sinner looks up to the One who died to save him, he may rejoice with fullness of joy, for his sins are pardoned. Kneeling in faith at the cross, he has reached the highest place to which man can attain.

Through the cross we learn that the heavenly Father loves us with a love that is infinite. Can we wonder that Paul exclaimed, ‘God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ’? Galatians 6:14. It is our privilege also to glory in the cross, our privilege to give ourselves wholly to Him who gave Himself for us. Then, with the light that streams from Calvary shining in our faces, we may go forth to reveal this light to those in darkness.” AA 209-210

Fasting to God’s Glory

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: . . . Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.” Isaiah 58:8 NIV

“The followers of Christ are to labor as He did. We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and comfort the suffering and afflicted. We are to minister to the despairing, and inspire hope in the hopeless. And to us also the promise will be fulfilled, ‘Thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rererward.’ Isa. 58:8. The love of Christ, manifested in unselfish ministry, will be more effective in reforming the evildoer than will the sword or the court of justice. These are necessary to strike terror to the lawbreaker, but the loving missionary can do more than this. Often the heart will harden under reproof; but it will melt under the love of Christ. The missionary cannot only relieve physical maladies, but he can lead the sinner to the Great Physician, who can cleanse the soul from the leprosy of sin. Through His servants, God designs that the sick, the unfortunate, those possessed of evil spirits, shall hear His voice. Through His human agencies He desires to be a Comforter such as the world knows not.” DA 350-351

Appeal: Today’s offering is for our World Budget. The ministry that we are highlighting is INNER CITY MINISTRIES, which is an outreach program of Adventist Community Services. Like The Mind of Christ Jesus

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in like fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8 KJV (Italics added)

“Point after point Paul lingered over, in order that those who should read his epistle might fully comprehend the wonderful condescension of the Saviour in their behalf. Presenting Christ as He was when equal with God and with Him receiving the homage of the angels, the apostle traced His course until He had reached the lowest depths of humiliation. Paul was convinced that if they could be brought to comprehend the amazing sacrifice made by the Majesty of heaven, all selfishness would be banished from their lives. He showed how the Son of God had laid aside His glory, voluntarily subjecting Himself to the conditions of human nature, and then had humbled Himself as a servant, becoming obedient unto death, "even the death of the cross" (Philippians 2:8), that He might lift fallen man from degradation to hope and joy and heaven.” AA 333

Let the Children Come

“Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, because the kingdom of Gob belongs to people who are like these children.” (Mark 10:14)

O, how Jesus loved children! We are told that the children were a blessing to Jesus. He loved to hear their simple expressions of praise and joy, especially after having to constantly deal with deceitful, hypocritical adults.

In those days, it was customary for children to be brought to a respected teacher for his blessing and because everywhere that Jesus went, His kind gentle manner won the love of the children and their parents.

“On this day, several mothers together brought their little ones to be blessed by Jesus. Jesus heard their request, but waited to see how the disciples would react. When they tried to send the mothers away, Jesus stopped them. ‘Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them...’ Then Jesus gathered to children in His arms and gave them a blessing. He saw that some of these very children would give their lives for His kingdom.” (Messiah pg. 284)

Today, our church continues to be blessed with an education system that not only emphasizes quality classroom instruction, but also provides an environment where students can sit at the feet of their Christian teachers, and be exposed to God’s love and personal care for each other.

Appeal: Our offering for today is for Southern New England Advance. We are highlighting the teaching ministry of the ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS within our Conference. Let us honor our Lord in supporting His children, who are given daily opportunities to choose a life of loving and serving Jesus AND an excellent academic training.

Prayer.
