Meeting Notes

May 11, 2009

Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Maricela Vital

A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 9:00 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21.

Review of Minutes from April 10, 2009 meeting

Minutes approved as written.

Department Updates

o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan:

Prisons

1) Mock Job Fair will be held May 13th. The past month has been spent working on the inmate’s resumes and interview skills in preparation for this event. Another Mock Job Fair has tentatively been scheduled for September.

2) AutoCAD classes on hold.

3) Parenting classes continue.

Computer Lab

1) A Saturday computer program with Foster Care children began their training on May 2nd.

2) One Stops continue to send laid off workers for training.

Maritime Training Classes

1) The next Standard for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class will take place on May 12th. The Lifeboat class for May has been cancelled due to repairs being made on the SS Lane Victory. TRL, a training site in San Diego, is accepting students for Lifeboat who would normally come here.

o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:

1) Received a $700,000 Fasteners’ grant for two years.

2) Started a new Aircraft Structure training with 15 students.

3) Preparing for new Fasteners’ class at Compton to start in June.

4) Working on collaborative grant for the Department of Energy in conjunction with Cal State Long Beach to develop green technologies.

o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia:

1) On-going work with the Title VI grant on the development of the unique International Trade compliance Institute (ITCI) website.

2) Planning two more custom Brokers classes in partnership with the Los Angeles Custom Brokers and Freight Forwarders.

3) Planning a new Harmonized Tariffs class to complement the Customs Broker exam prep course. Cost to be determined.

4) The internship program at the CITD is very popular. Four new interns will come for a summertime internship to develop new Best Market Reports.

o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger:

1) The Youth Entrepreneurial Program Award Luncheon will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009. There will be display tables recognizing the accomplishments of the participants. CITD is sponsoring the speaker for the event.

2) Star Van Buren will be attending a mandatory meeting, on May 19th at the Chancellor’s Office, regarding updates in the Cal Trans program.

o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital:

Employee Training Panel (ETP)

Three companies are in progress with training. Two companies will be starting training soon. Toyota training scheduled to start in late May.

Contract Education

1) City of Redondo Beach’s Customer Service training continues through 07/30/09.

2) City of Torrance’s Customer Service training to begin June 1st.

3) Customer Service training for a non-profit organization is being explored.

Discussion

o Budget: California is in dire need of a budget fix. May 19th Special Election ballot is crucial. Stimulus Opportunities: The next two years will be bad but the stimulus opportunities will help us. We will be looking at entrepreneurial opportunities.

o Board Elections: Two board members are up for election. You may be requested to provide information regarding your programs.

o PSAs and Contracts for 2009/10: PSAs and Contracts should be sent out during May and June. They will be submitted to the vice president no later than June 25th for the July Board.

o Board items for Special Services Professionals, Casuals and Special Assignments for 2009/10 must be submitted to Gary Turner no later than May 21st for fiscal approval before moving to the vice president for the June Board. They must be Board approved before they start working on July 1st.
