Frances Cooper has original family photograph showing John Alexander Cooper, Jeannie Allan and family. Allan Cooper has a photographic negative.

Note 1: Her brother was minister of Rayne. He had 2 daughters and one married Mr Coutts the London banker and the other married Leslie of Wartle.

Patrick Davidson Tacksman, possibly a Davidson of Inchmarlo, a witness at Davidson of Newtown baptisims so probably related.

Note 2: Recognised in London by Mr Coutts as a Cooper of Wraes. Seen off in his ship by the Coutts family. Washed overboard and lost at sea.

Note 3: From the Peterhead Sentinel 30th January 1891 - At 49 Queen Street, Peterhead on the 28th inst Jane Cooper relict of Robert Ord, sometime

farmer at Slack, Kennethmont, in her 79th year.

Note 4: Andrew Couper of Newtown of Clatt was a witness at baptisms.

Note 5: Their daughter Elizabeth Campbell c - -1830 taught at Rothiemay. Qualified first woman in Scotland with Government Teaching Certificate.

Note 6: Letter from Arthur Davidson RN, Kennethmont, Maybury Road, Barnton, Midlothian 12th November 1934 to Dr George Cooper

(words in brackets are from Betty Cosgrove).

Thanks very much for your letters with all the news. We never hear anything here. I knew a good lot about the history you have been reading. The first

Coutt's of Coutt's Bank started in Edinburgh. It was in the Scotsman the other day about a history of Banking in Scotland but I did not keep it

unfortunately. This Coutts emigrated to London. Your grandmother was born about 1819 but she was one of the youngest of the family. I think her mother

became insane but I am not sure. I know they had great trouble with one of the family who was mad (Betty Cosgrove heard from her mother via Nora Cooper/

Thomson something odd about Ledinghams). I have heard Auntie Ann (Davidson) talk about the Davidson that married the Leslie of Wartle. She belonged to

the generation before Aunty Ann and would have been a cousin of her father (confirms relationship with Patrick Davidson of Scotstown). I have seen a

whole family tree but I don't know where it is. I also heard of Sandy Cooper walking in the Strand (I think) outside Coutt's Bank and old Coutts came

out and recognised him at once and said "guid sake its a Cooper from Wraes". Before the big Banks were started the Coopers and Davidsons both lent money

to all the little farmers round about. I have seen old Arthur Davidson's (writers grandfather) book with the names of about 30 people he had lent £30 to

£50 to and the Coopers of Wraes had lent the Laird of Wardhouse so much that they had no rent to pay for a while but eventually settled their debt by

driving off all the Laird's cattle. Your great grandfather at Wraes was very well off for those days but I don't think he made his money off the farm,

because it was your grandfather that built the steading and also cleared off hundreds of cart loads of stones so that the place could be cultivated. I

am pleased that Hugh is a little better but how he will be able to live with the food he gets beats me (poor housekeeper).

Note 7: Isabella Allan b - - Huntly was house servant at Wraes during 1851 census.

From Betty Cosgrove - My father was expected to marry Mary Bisset. Once he had met mother, I take it, he wrote to his mother saying "I don't want to hear any more

about Mary Bisset". I am sure Grandma found it all very difficult. Mother did meet Mary who married late in life. I can sympathise with

Grandmother. As a child at Dunnydeer I reminded my parents so much of Grandmother, as if I were her ghost!. I sometimes feel I identify with her.

Hugh Allan died at Burnside Villa, Portsoy. His grave is in the oldest part of the cemetery at Portsoy. It is at the wall between the oldest and second oldest

part of the cemetery, about 3 graves down to the left from the path. It also commemorates his wife Janet Cooper, their son John who died at Demerera, their

daughter Jessie wife of Charles Quinn. Also Charles Quinn, son of Jessie, and Janet Cooper Quinn (Dolly) daughter of Jessie both of whom died at Westcote, Portsoy.

Another stone, through the opening and up to the right commemorates John Fortune and his wife Mary Ann McConnachie. Also their son John McConnachie Fortune and

daughter Elizabeth Allan Fortune. This stone is also against the wall but on the other side. Other members of this family are probably buried at Portsoy or at

Fordyce old and new cemetery.

Other graves at Fordyce cemetery - George Allan of Glassaugh House Died 1936 aged 76 years - William Allan of Glassaugh House Died 2nd June 1943 aged 74 years

- John? Allan of Glassaugh House Died 15th May 1950 aged 84 years. Research shows this was not the same family.

Charles Quinn was the son of John Quinn (farmer) and Mary Ann Costello. Charles occupation was given as Inland Revenue at the time of his marriage at Glassaugh

and witnesses were John Fortune and Andrew Allan (so Andrew Allan had not gone to Canada yet).

Births, at Mains of Glassaugh, of Charles Hamilton Quinn and Janet Cooper Quinn were registered by aunt Jane Allan who had not yet married Andrew Davidson.

Allan Robertson was a bachelor who lived in Australia. He visited Dunnydeer House about the late 1950s. When he died in Australia some of his personal

belongings were sent to his cousin Dr Cooper who in turn gave some of the trinkets (some belonging to Allan Robertsons mother Helen Allan) to George Watson

Cooper who had 3 rings made from plain gold rings set with Zircon's from cufflinks. These were given to Betty, Lorna and Carol. The disruption in 1843

apparently started at Forgue church.

Note 1: George Watson Cooper remembered of a whisky still located among the clump of trees at Wraes beside the back road from Insch to Huntly.

Note 2: From Sandy Thomson - James lived at Altrincham, Cheshire and worked for Royal Insurance (and Cotton Exchange). Aunt Chrissie Duff maintained contact,

Manchester not being far. The war (1939-45) made it difficult to maintain and James had died. When petrol restrictions were lifted

about 1946/47 and a small quantity was permitted for pleasure John Duff said Chrissie should visit and I would drive her. I can

recall 2 Sunday afternoon visits to this Fortune. John Duff did not accompany. I think they were family but did not meet.

Note 3: From Sandy Thomson - He moved to Milltimber, Aberdeen early 1930's as manager of Royal Insurance, Aberdeen. My parents liked

Peter and his wife and we made a number of visits. I cannot recall what happened or when as our father became ill in 1939 and war intervened.

Note 4: At this time Inland Revenue and Excise were different jobs. It looks as if Charles Hamilton Quinn was a revenue Customs man. Letterkenny is a port. Was

he a Customs man at Portsoy?.

Elizabeth Allan was baptised at Culsalmond 05-01-1839. Witnesses were John and Andrew Allan.

George, Jessie, Janet and John were all baptised at Fordyce in 1850. Witnesses were Rev Andrew Allan and Rev Wm

Middleton of Culsalmond.

Elizabeth, George, Jessie and Janet were born at Culsalmond but there is no record of births there other than Elizabeth.

Mr and Mrs Allan (d - -1923 and d - -1939) are buried at Huntly - Section C, Plot 442, Gate on RHS, against wall, no gravestone

The Culsalmond Riot - from the Press and Journal Weekend Review 06-03-1965

On October 28th 1841 the Presbytery of the Garioch met in Culsalmond to moderate the call to William Middleton of Titabootie as colleague and successor to the

Rev Ferdinand Ellis, the Presentee of the Patron of the Parish, the Laird of Craigievar. Middleton was unpopular and only 45 heads of families voted for him, 89

against. The Presbytery upheld the call by seven votes to five. In those days of pre-disruption controversy it was a clear case of "intrusion" - the foisting of

a minister on the congregation against its wishes. So, on November 11th when the Presbytery, backed by the sheriff and a large force of the newly formed Police

under Captain Anderson, arrived to "settle" Mr Middleton in his charge there was a riot.

The famous bell of John VANDENGHLEN in its beautiful Renaissance belfry dating from 1506 looked down on a scene unique in its annals. A vast crowd of anti-

intrusionists from "a the airts" had converged on the old kirk on its hill. Captain Anderson had his whiskers tugged, the minister had his nose pulled and when

at last the Presbytery got into the kirk and sat huddled at the foot of the pulpit non-stop pandemonium broke loose. It is said locally that the noise was heard

at Pitmachee, Old Rayne.

Captain Dalrymple, an elder declaring that the Presbytery had been deforced from its duty, claimed the laws protection and the official party fought their way

to the manse and inducted Mr Middleton there. Five alleged ringleaders of the riot were tried in the High Court at Edinburgh. None were convicted and they

returned to Culsalmond like conquering heroes. (See Mrs Quinns Cooper history page 14).

The "Free Church" adherents built themselves a wooden kirk just opposite the school. This "Timmer" kirk as it was called was later lifted and carried to a site

at the boundary of three estates at Catden. Then in 1867 the present fine church and manse was built at Williamston. The auld kirk is now roofless and the South

church, formerly the United Free Church is the one in use.

It is now linked to Daviot, Rayne and Old Rayne and has a female minister (1991).

The fine Episcopal church at Fisherford is now disused and the former Congregational chapel at Cairnhill was in ruin but was reconstructed as a house about

1990.

Location of the Timmer Kirk - Beside a ruined cottage behind the Tearoom just off the Glens of Foudland road - not the wooden Tearoom on the left going north,

but one on the right, below the road in a converted steading. The Timmer Kirk was on a slight hill. The manse for it was the first house on the left on the road

which branches off to the right from the A96 about 1.5 miles north of Colpy (The sign is for a craft shop and restaurant to the right of the road).

Colpy Farm - Where Hugh Allan and his wife Janet Cooper lived. The steading is still as it must have been at that time but the house has been demolished and a

modern bungalow put in its place.

Location of Colpy Farm - From Insch, take the road leading to Colpy from Denwell Road (ie via Waterton and Knockanbaird). Go almost to the end of Colpy village

then turn off to the left along a narrow road. The farm is only about 200 yds along the road with the steading on the left hand side and the house on the right.

The United Free Church opened in 1867. A lot of money was collected locally and there were plenty of helpers. Apparently, at one time the builder ran out of

stones, so the farmers stopped their work (at the time the "neeps were in a bleeze" ie more than ready to hoe) yoked up their carts and went to collect more

though it is not known where the stones came from.

A beautiful manse was also built but it is now a private house and is called "Culsalmond House". When the buildings and furnishing were complete there was no

debt as the money collected was sufficient.

From Betty Cosgrove: On 25th June 1791 Alexander Fraser gifted the land and seigneury of St Giles to his grandson, Walter Davidson, then aged 10 months, in the presence of

Arthur Davidson. Walter Davidson (1790 – 1825) was 30 years old at the time of the Marriage Contract dated 25 April 1820 with Ann Bernie of Ballymena, Ireland. Under the

terms of the gift from his grandfather, Walter had to wait until age 40 before taking possession of the seigneury of St Giles of Beaurivage. If he died before and without

issue, the property would revert to his sisters or the survivor of them. When Walter died in Glasgow 13 May 1825, without issue, the survivor was Jane Davidson (1785 – 1866),

married to David Ross (1770 – 1837).

From Betty Cosgrove: Flora Davidson is Davidson Clan Archivist. Arthur c20-10-1774 - have his valuation which shows he lent money to farmers. Subscribed to

turnpikes and had a few shares and money at Huntly and Insch banks. Newtown the house, new when Jeannie Allen married in 1872, has been re-built by Mr Beattie the present

(1996) farmer. I visited him and told him about the Davidsons . He was most interested in local history. I also told him the farm - famous for its cattle had water

supply in every field. He agreed and said he had just cleaned out the old Wardhouse water channels (or Andrew born 1827 – Betty also has valuation).

Epitaphs and Inscription at St Nicholas Church and churchyard - The Old or Next church (Scottish notes and queries Oct 1887 page 69)

The following inscription, cut on old lair stone, is in excellant preservation

HIC REQUIESCUNT (Here rest

MAGISTER ALEXr. DAVIDSON DE CARN Mr. Alexander Davidson of Carn

BROGIE JVRISCONSVLTVS QUI OBITT 26 brogie, Advocate, who died 26th

APRILIS A.D. M.DCLXVL April, anno domini 1666.

ET MAGISTER ALEXr DAVIDSON DE NEVTOVN And Mr. Alexander Davidson of Newton,

JVRISCONSVLTVS FILIVS EIUS MORIENS 2 Advocate, his son, who died 2nd

APRILIS A . AE . C M.DCLXXXV April, in the year of the Christian era 1685

HI RESVRRECTIONEM . AD . VITAM . PRAESTOLANTVR They await the resurrection to life.)

Among the earliest notices of Carnbrogie is that made in a charter by Alexander II to

the Abbey of Arbroath in 1234, where in enumerating the lands of Tarves the davach

of "Cairnbrogyn" is included.

It was this Alexander Davidson who is mentioned by Spalding as "ane good honest

man of the Kingis", and as having been plundered by Mr James Baird of 300 merks,

although from a subsequent statement it would appear that his total loss was 450 merks.

He was son to Mr Thomas Davidson, and was received as a Guild brother on the 27th

October, 1578.

William Davidson of Newton, grandson of the second Alexander here commemorated,

was Provost of Aberdeen from 1760 to 1762.

Thomas Davidson, admitted burgess 4 Oct 1538.

From Betty Cosgrove - Newtown at Culsalmond (on A96 The Old Turnpike built 1804). The bounds of these lands were fixed

in 1259 by Richard, Bishop of Aberdeen and Thomas, Abbot of Lindores. This Newtown belonged to royalist Gordons and

later Davidsons. Capt Davidson built the Mansion House in 1779 and later sold it to Col McIntosh who later sold it to

Alexander Gordon. Betty Cosgrove read in Aberdeen Library that Alexander Davidson was a captain of militia. In an

arguement over boundary for raising militia he threw a glass of wine in another militia officer's face. My father Arthur

Davidson born Newtown of Wardhouse told the same story of a Davidson ancestor. Are the Davidsons of Newtown in

Culsalmond and the Davidsons of Newtown of Wardhouse the same family?.
