George enters the top 10 list of most popular small animal names

Just last week Prince George met his Australian rabbit namesake while on a zoo visit during the royal tour down under.

However, it's not just one lucky Bilby who can thank the baby Prince for his name, as new research shows that George has entered the top 10 list of small animal names.

According to Pets at Home's loyalty scheme, the VIP (Very Important Pets) club, of which there are two million members, George is the ninth most popular name for small animals such as a rabbits, hamsters or guinea pigs.

Of the 838,000 small animals in the club, Daisy was the most popular name with 1,882 pets, followed by Fudge (1,874), Poppy (1,654) and Charlie (1,360).

Other favourite names included Nibbles, Rosie, Harry, Honey and of course, the ever-popular Thumper.

George came in ninth place, with 1,134 pets, with an additional two called `Prince George' who were registered in 2013 following the royal Prince's birth.

Gavin Hawthorn, head of Pets at Home's VIP club, said: "George was extremely popular with parents naming their new babies over the last year so it's no surprise the trend has caught on when naming pets. After all, we're a nation of pet lovers who see our pets as another member of our family.

"The top 10 names for small animals is an interesting mix of cute and traditional names like Honey, Poppy and Fudge, alongside rather regal names like George, Harry and Charlie. However it's great to see good old Thumper still makes the list!"

Between them, the VIP club members are the proud owners of nearly 7 and a half million pets, including more than 1.8 million dogs, 1.3 million cats, 2.5 million fish, 429,000 birds, 233 reptiles, 838,000 small animals and 126,000 horses.

The VIP Club is a customer reward card for pet lovers, which enables shoppers to convert the points they receive into much needed support for a local or national animal charity of their choice.

Every time a purchase is made and the card is swiped, the customer collects points, called VIP Lifelines, which can be redeemed by animal charities to provide essential supplies. As a club member, customers will be able to access a string of benefits for their own pets as well as helping animals in need of a loving home.
