Example of an excellent answer

The responses presented were all concise, a clear indication that the candidate complied fully with the instructions in the rubrics. The candidate provided fully appropriate responses with no additional irrelevant information, illustrating in the process, a high level of proficiency and competence in the manipulation of the Spanish language. The candidate was therefore able to access the full range of marks on this section.

Item 1: The candidate demonstrated a command of essential elements of grammar. The response was void of error, with good use of subjunctive mood after cuando when future time is implied.

Item 2: The response rendered clearly showed that the candidate understood the demands of the question and did not simply translate the situation given. The candidate again displayed an ability to perform linguistically at an appropriate level, through the correct conjugation of preterite of the radical changing 7R'verb morir.

Item 3: The candidate adeptly used precision, clarity and accuracy to provide a simple response, using the immediate future (ir a+infinitive) to adequately perform the desired function.

Item 4: Another simple response but expressed with a level of linguistic maturity and ability to manipulate the language. The candidate skilfully avoided the use of the subjunctive mood that would have been required with the sentence construction sugiero que,..,

Item 5: The candidate exhibited a natural ability with the language and good vocabulary.

Item 6: Further evidence of the candidate's competency in the language was seen in the selection of appropriate register -- the use of the subjunctive mood to express the polite/formal imperative in a situation where student was addressing the teacher.

Item 7: The candidate again showed mastery in the technique to respond with simplicity, thus avoiding the possibility of increased errors. Also, there was further evidence of the candidate's sound command of verb conjugation -- the irregular preterite of the verb venir.

Item 8: This was an appropriate response with correct use of the imperfect tense.

Item 9: The candidate used the verb gustar correctly in the conditional tense, appropriately followed by the infinitive of the second verb and the correct preposition en after the verb entrar.

Item 10: The candidate clearly understood the task to be fulfilled and provided a flawless response, the two elements required were cleverly presented. The idiomatic expression tener que + infinitive, as well as the use of the personal a were commendable.

Measures for Improvement

One noted pitfall was the candidate's tendency to omit accents. Omission of accents especially where it changes the meaning of a word is an error and carries a penalty. Quality of work could be significantly improved if sufficient attention is given to spelling.
