The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 336.25 points, or 1.38%, to 24,706.35, while the NASDAQ composite rose 72.76 points, or 1.03%, to 7,157.23.

US stocks rallied to the highest level in 6 weeks amid increased investor confidence in the global economy following signs that China and the US are closing in on a trade truce as well as stronger factory numbers.

It was reported that China has offered to buy more US goods to eliminate the trade imbalance by 2024.

US factory production expanded by 1.1% in December from a month earlier, the biggest gain in the past 10 months, mainly due to a surge in motor-vehicle output and gains across a range of other goods.

The University of Michigan's preliminary January sentiment index fell to 90.7, the lowest since October 2016. The index of future expectations also dimmed, indicating that the government shutdown is weighing on Americans' economic outlook.

The Bank of Italy has cut its growth forecast for this year from 1% to 0.6%, and for next year from 1.1% to 0.9%. It also signalled that the country might have slipped into a new recession at the end of 2018.

The Canadian dollar was the sole G10 currency to gain against the US dollar last Friday after the Canadian consumer price index rose by 2% in December, higher than the market expectation of 1.7%.
