Comparing Colonial Life to Life in Today's Society

Then

? Education was more important for boys than it was for girls.

? There were very few resources available. The only book in most schools was the Bible.

? One-Room Schoolhouse--all of the children, from kindergarten through 8th grade, were taught in the same room, by one teacher.

? Heated by fireplace, teacher & students had to clean & fix the school.

? Dunce Caps and Stools for kids who didn't behave or who weren't smart.

? Eat foods that were locally available--like the three sisters (corn, beans, and squash), hunted local animals, cooked over fire. (Learned from Lenape.)

? Used herbs and other medical techniques like the Lenape.

? Houses were small--cold in winter and hot in summer.

? Slept in family room, not in bedrooms. ? No indoor bathroom. ? No running water. ? Boys: helping their fathers hunt. Usually, boys

learned the same trade (job) as their fathers. ? Girls: helping their moms--cleaning, feeding

farm animals, cooking, sewing, taking care of smaller children.

Now

? Education is equally important for everyone-- boys AND girls!

? We have lots of resources, including MANY books, computers, internet, ActivBoard, etc.

? Separate rooms and teachers for kids in different grades.

? Heating & AC throughout, teachers & students do not clean or fix the school.

? Consequences are not as embarrassing, and we have tutors and extra teachers.

? Eat all kinds of foods. We have supermarkets & we are able to get foods from all over the place, not just local foods.

? Have medicines from pharmacies, also can go to doctors & hospitals.

? Houses are larger than they were back then.

? Sleep in own bedrooms--even kids! ? Indoor bathroom(s). ? Indoor running water! ? Boys & Girls--chores around the house, school

& homework

Entertainment of Boys & Girls Transportation

Communication

? Boys: played games with a ball, played marble games, bang on drums, climb trees

? Girls: played with cornhusk or wooden dolls, sewed samplers for fun

? Travel by pod (small sleigh pulled by 1 horse) & pung (bigger sleigh pulled by a team of 2 horses)

? Traveling was not easy. ? People did not travel for fun--they only

traveled if they had to. ? Sending handwritten letters.

? Paid a person to deliver the letter--NO mail service.

? It took at least a month for the letter to get there.

? Boys & Girls--play sports, play video games, watch TV, ride bikes, play with friends

? Travel by car, bus, train, plane, boat.

? Traveling is much easier today. ? People travel every day--for both work and

fun. ? Letters, emails, texts, phones, cell phones,

radio, tv, etc. ? US Postal Service, also we have internet &

cable services ? Communication is instant!
