Ward Description

The Ward of Brandwood and Kings Heath was formed following the Kerslake review of Birmingham City Council and the 2016 Boundary Commission review of Ward Boundaries. It is a diverse Ward made up of three distinct neighbourhoods – Allenscroft – Brandwood and Kings Heath. The A435 and A4040 are the principal arterial routes through the Ward and Kings Heath Centre “The Heath” is the principle shopping centre. A Business Improvement District raises a levy on most businesses on or adjacent to the high Street. The Ward connects a range of communities of place, practice and interests – across the Ward there is a rich history of community activism and within key community groups a well-developed sense of place. The local Councillors see their role as the facilitation and support of community led initiatives where needed providing the catalyst and drawing in partner resources to maximise impact. With growth at both ends of the age spectrum there is the opportunity to develop policy and practice that reconciles the interests of today’s community with those who we will seek to take forward our city. The schools both primary and secondary in the area are good and outstanding - with provision for children with additional needs a key factor within a number of mainstream schools alongside specialist provision. Cuts to schools and SEN provision generally are hitting a number of schools hard with budgetary concerns driving reduced hours and provision in schools. Surveys of residents highlight the fact people like living in the area and in Kings Heath and Brandwood the strong sense of place translates into shared pride in being part of the Kings Heath community.
