HISTORY

The establishment of a school in Grand Bay began when the first school was built near Warren’s Creek in 1866. In 1929, Mobile County High School, as it was named then, was built on Cunningham Road. When Alma Bryant High School was built in 1998, Grand Bay High School merged with Alba High School to form the new high school and the former high school in Grand Bay became a middle school that fall. School colors and motto have remained the same as the school has been restructured throughout the years. Black and gold can still be seen when the mighty Tigers take the field or court to defend their proud heritage.

MISSION STATEMENT

Grand Bay Middle School will provide a positive learning environment with high expectations that will foster dependable, responsible citizens.

MOTTO: “The Road to Success”

Grand Bay Middle School is committed to “student learning.” This commitment enables all students to travel a “Road to Success.” Grand Bay challenges our students to strive for excellence in all their endeavors. Achievement in middle school leads to the “Road to Success” in high school and to being a productive member of the community.

VISION

The vision of Grand Bay Middle School is to be a school where everyone works together to provide a stimulating learning environment in which the faculty provides quality teaching with academic rigor that addresses the needs of our students in partnership with parents and the community.

BELIEFS

At Grand Bay Middle School we believe:

• in the development of well-rounded students,

• all students can learn,

• a rigorous and relevant curriculum fosters life-long learners

• a safe and orderly environment creates a positive learning climate

• in setting high standards of learning

• in celebrating the achievements of every student.

GRAND BAY MIDDLE SCHOOL ALMA MATER

With the beginning of each new day

Grand Bay Tigers will lead the way.

As we lift up our voices strong,

we will sing you this joyful song.

We will, we will stand for truth and

show our pride with the black and gold.

We will, we will live each day

for we are Tigers of our Grand Bay.

As the rising sun starts to shine,

We will build both body and mind.

Pass the torch; let it brightly burn.

Spirits soar for the chance to learn.

Written by Sue Boone

We’re gonna kick’em and rock’em

And toss’em to the ground.

Cause we’re the Grand Bay Tigers –

We’re the best all around.

Go Tigers, Go Tigers – let me see you soar.

Go Tigers, Go Tigers - let me hear you roar.

People you should know. . . .

ASSEMBLY CONDUCT

Assemblies are held for the education and enjoyment of students and faculty. It is the responsibility of each student to maintain high standards of conduct. When the speaker comes to the podium or microphone to begin the assembly, all members of the audience should end all conversations and direct their attention to the speaker. Neither teachers, nor the speaker, should not have to ask for students’ attention or wait for silence. Violations will result in denial of assembly privileges and may be cause for further disciplinary action.

One of the main reasons for assemblies is to give students an opportunity to learn how to behave appropriately in large groups. We have two types of assemblies – formal and informal.

• At formal assemblies (Honors Day, etc.), whistling, shouting, and booing are rude and will not be tolerated. Guests often attend the assemblies and should see the very best behavior students have to offer. Students should be seated with their teachers.

• At informal assemblies (faculty-student ballgames, pep rallies, etc.), students may cheer and make noise at appropriate times, but are still expected to have good manners and good sportsmanship.

At the end of assemblies, stay seated until you are given instructions about when and where to go. Remember, the better we behave at assemblies, the more likely we are to have additional assemblies.

ATTENDANCE

1. Students are required to be on time for school. It is the responsibility of the parents or guardians to make sure that their children arrive on time each day.

2. Any time that a student is absent, the parent or guardian must send a written note to school satisfactorily explaining the absence. A satisfactory note from a parent or guardian meets the following State guidelines: illness, death in the immediate family; inclement weather (as determined by the principal) which would be dangerous to the life and health of the child; legal quarantine; emergency conditions as determined by the principal; and prior permission of the principal and consent of the parent or guardian. The note or doctor's excuse must be sent to school within three (3) days of the student's return to school to be counted as an excused absence.

3. Parents or guardians of any student having a chronic ailment that may cause the child to miss school during the year are required to provide the school with a doctor's statement verifying the child's condition. This must be done as soon as the problem occurs and repeated at the beginning of each school year.

4. Prior permission must be obtained from the principal in order for absences for out-of-town trips to be excused.

5. Students must be in attendance one-half of the instructional day to be counted present. An early dismissal before 1/2 day (3 1/2 hours) or a tardy after 1/2 day is counted as an absence. Tardies and early dismissals are strongly discouraged.

6. Students are allowed three (3) excused absences for each occurrence of head lice. In cases of prolonged absence due to illness, the parent or guardian should seek assistance from the Homebound Program or make other reasonable arrangements with the principal of the school.

7. Students are allowed 8 parent notes per year to cover absences. After 8

parent notes have been used, absences must be covered by doctor notes, court appearance, family emergency, or pre-approved by the principal to be excused.

8. It is important to be careful about the number of early dismissals you have during the school year. Parents will be asked to pick students up the last 5 minutes of a class period so that academic instructional time will not be interrupted. There will be NO early dismissals after 2:00 p.m. unless it is an extreme emergency.

BUILDING USE

Students may remain in the school building after regular hours for scheduled activities if a faculty member is present. After 2:45 p.m., students are not permitted in the building unless they have prior permission by the principal. Any student found loitering in the building after 2:45 p.m. or on weekends will be trespassing and shall be held accountable for any missing or destroyed items. Students are not permitted to use the gymnasium unless a faculty member is present.

BULLETIN BOARDS AND STUDENT WORK DISPLAYS

We are proud of the bulletin boards in the halls and classrooms and the displays of student work. Our own students and teachers create them. You can help us keep them attractive by avoiding touching, tearing, or marking on them. The same thing applies to posters and notices posted in the halls. Any one who defaces a bulletin board or other notices and posters will be referred to the administration.

BUS RULES AND REGULATIONS

For students’ safety, the following rules have been established. You are expected to follow the rules at ALL times. Students are also governed by the discipline code of the Mobile County Public School System. Bus transportation to and from school is a privilege. Any infraction of the rules may result in discontinuation of bus privileges.

1. Follow all directions given by the driver willingly the first time they are given.

2. Show respect for the driver and the other students.

3. Eating and drinking are not permitted. Put all litter in the trash can.

4. Harassment (teasing, shouting, pushing or fighting) is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

5. Remain seated, keeping all parts of your body inside the bus. Seat assignments may be made by the driver or school administration and will be observed.

6. Classroom level conversation and conduct will be observed at all times.

7. When entering or exiting the bus, students must be in view of the driver.

8. Always cross in front of the bus. Exit only at your assigned stop.

9. Pets, harmful objects (including guns or weapons) are not allowed on the bus. Vandalism of the bus is not permitted.

10. Emergency exit procedure drills will apply in the case of actual emergencies.

CAFETERIA

Breakfast and lunch are available for students. All school rules of conduct apply while in the cafeteria. Students sit at assigned tables and are expected to clean up the area where they eat.

CHEWING GUM

Chewing gum is prohibited at Grand Bay. Please help us keep the school clean by observing this rule.

COMMERCIAL DELIVERIES

An orderly flower and gift disbursement procedure is in place at Grand Bay Middle School. However, due to the disruption that occurs to student achievement and the orderly operation of the school, frequent deliveries are discouraged. Large deliveries and those with balloons will not be allowed on school buses.

COMPUTERS, TECHNOLOGY AND NETWORKS

Grand Bay Middle School is committed to the effective use of technology to enhance the quality of student learning. It also recognizes that safeguards have to be established to ensure that the school and system’s investment in hardware and software is achieving the benefits of technology and inhibiting negative side effects. The use of technology resources is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of that privilege. Before any student will be granted access to any computer or be allowed to use our technology resources, he/she must understand the acceptable use policy. Should a student commit any violation, his/her access privileges may be revoked and disciplinary action may be taken, which may include suspension or appropriate legal action. In order to use the Internet, you must complete an Internet Acceptable Usage Agreement. You will receive an ID for using this technology. Outside flash drives are NOT allowed to be used with any computer at Grand Bay Middle School. Downloading any information, programs, music, or graphics is prohibited.

CONFERENCES

Conferences may be held by one or all of your child’s teachers. You may call the school or send a note by your child to schedule a conference. EVERY parent will be invited to meet with a teacher to discuss your child’s current achievement level.

COUNSELORS

The counselors are available to talk with you when you have a school-related or personal problem and to help you with information about career planning and class choices. If you need help in any of these areas, ask your teacher for a pass to the counselor’s office during homeroom and make an appointment.

DISCIPLINE

Grand Bay Middle School exists for the total education of the individual student. In order for this to occur, the proper safe and orderly environment must exist. All students have a major responsibility to ensure this environment. Therefore, proper conduct is required. The Mobile County Public School System Code of Student Conduct lists specific violations. Consequences for any infraction of school rules will be enforced by the local school administration according to the Discipline Code. Each student will receive and sign for a Mobile County Public School System Code of Conduct.

ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND WEAPONS

Any student who intentionally sells, gives, possesses, uses or is under the influence of illicit drugs, narcotics, or alcohol in or on school property including buses and off-campus activities, shall be subject to immediate disciplinary action which will be long term suspension, expulsion and/or arrest. Enforcement officers can be called as well. Any student who brings any type of weapon or firearm on campus is also subject to immediate disciplinary action, as per the Discipline Code of the Mobile County Public School System.

PROHIBITED ITEMS

Students are prohibited from bringing any items to school which are detrimental to the safety of others or which interfere in any way with normal school procedure or the orderly environment. Such items will be confiscated by the administration. These items include, but are not limited to, drugs, alcohol, or weapons of any kind, electronic devices, such as game players or M3Ps. Under the Mobile County Public School System Discipline Policy, personal searches may be conducted if the principal has a reasonable suspicion that the student has in his possession a prohibited item or substance.

TOBACCO USE/SMOKING

Since Alabama law makes the purchase, possession, or use of cigarettes illegal for anyone under the age of 19, the use of tobacco in any form by any student is prohibited. This includes electronic cigarettes. The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners prohibits smoking and the possession of tobacco products on all campuses. This policy includes adults. Violations should be reported to school administration for appropriate disciplinary action per the Discipline Code of the Mobile County Public School System.

DISMISSAL

• At 2:28 p.m. students are escorted to buses.

• Students who ride a bus must leave through the designated areas. All buses will be loaded immediately.

• Cars riders and walkers will leave the building through the designated areas at 2:28.

• All students must leave campus immediately unless staying for a school sponsored activity.

• Wait only in designated areas. Do not reenter the building.

EMERGENCY/HEALTH CARDS

It is imperative that ALL students have a completed emergency/health card on file by the end of the first week of school. Changes of address, phone numbers, or guardianship should be reported to the registrar as soon as possible. Remember, this is vital information needed for the safety and well-being of each student. Please update cell phone numbers when you change them.

FIELD TRIPS

Students who attend any school sponsored field trip or activity that takes them out of class, will not be counted absent from school. Since they are not absent, they are responsible for all assignments that take place in class while they are out. If possible students should obtain assignments prior to the field trip so they are prepared for class upon their return to campus. Individual teachers have the right to not allow a student to miss his/her class for a field trip, if the child is not performing well academically. All students should have a field trip form signed by all his/her teachers as well as his/her parents prior to the field trip deadline.

FIRE AND TORNADO DRILLS

Fire and weather drills are carried out in accordance with State and System policies as outlined in Grand Bay Middle School’s Emergency Plan. Evacuation routes are posted in each classroom.

Fire Drill Procedure:

• Stop all work immediately and move out quickly in single file without any talking.

• Exit according to the directions of your teacher, and stay far enough away from the building to be safe. Do not go into the street.

• Stand silent in line while your teacher checks roll.

• Return to the building when the signal is given.

Tornado Drill Procedure:

• Stop work immediately, move quickly and quietly to areas designated by your teacher.

• Sit on the floor facing the wall. Put your head on your knees, and cover your head with your hands.

• Remain in this position, without talking, until the signal to return to class.

FUNDRAISING

No money should be collected by students or faculty unless it is preapproved by the principal, including fundraising drives by the school or community organizations, selling chances, or collections of any kind.

HALL REGULATIONS/PASSES

Except during class change, no student is to be in the halls without a COMPLETED pass. ALL passes must be dated, have the time, destination and be signed by the student’s teacher. Any student in the hallways or out on campus without a pass is considered skipping. Running, shouting and/or public displays of affection are unacceptable in the hallway or on campus. No food or drink is allowed in the halls.

HALL BEHAVIOR

When going through the halls:

• Walk quickly and quietly, especially if you are moving during class time.

• Always keep to the right side of the hall to keep traffic moving smoothly, especially at corners.

• Absolutely no running or horse playing in the halls.

• Keep hands and feet to yourself as you walk down the hall, and do not hold up traffic by walking slowly or stopping to talk.

HOMEROOM

Homeroom is at the beginning of each day. No student should be out of the room during homeroom. No passes will be given during announcements. Announcements and attendance check is made during this time each morning. It is important for you to listen to announcements, to be well informed about the information the administrative needs to tell students for the day.

HONORS PROGRAM

An Honors Program is held quarterly in order to recognize those students with outstanding grades and attendance. Family and friends are invited to join the celebration. Students receive certificates for the following:

• “A” Honor Roll: Student must have an A in scholastic achievement for all subjects.

• “AB” Honor Roll: Student must have an A or B in scholastic achievement in all subject.

• Perfect Attendance: Student must have no absences and/or less than three tardies for the quarter.

ILLNESS AND INJURIES/FIRST AID:

A student who is ill should get a Health Pass from his/her teacher to come to the first aid room in the office. You may stay in the office for no more than 10 minutes. If you are too sick to return to class, a parent or guardian will be notified to come for you. If you have a health condition such as diabetes, a hearing condition, epilepsy, etcetera, be sure to indicate this on your health card and let your teachers know. Be sure your P. E. teachers know if you have health concerns.

Accidents which occur on campus should be reported to the teacher, who in turn will notify the office. Any injury which requires professional medical attention also requires that certain forms be completed. Grand Bay Middle School, nor the Mobile County Public Schools, can reimburse for any expenses related to accidents and/or injuries. Any charges related to any emergency response will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER

Library hours are 7:15 a.m. – 2:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The library may also be open by special request in the afternoons if groups of students need additional library time. Students should contact Ms. Hyatt in advance to set up any special times.

Checkout Policies:

Books in the GBMS Library are either categorized as circulating books or reference books. Regular circulating books, such as fiction, biography and nonfiction, may be checked out for two weeks. Reference books may not be checked out.

Internet/Computer Usage:

The computers in the library are for research, word processing, and Accelerated Reading only. Students are NOT allowed to play games, check e-mail or surf the Internet. Any student wishing to have Internet access at Grand Bay Middle School must first have parental consent, as per the Internet Usage Policy. Absolutely NO exceptions! All research will be done through the Alabama Virtual Library. Outside flash drives or computer disks are not allowed in the library or computer labs.

Library Conduct:

All students should remember that the library is a quiet place where others read, study, and think. Consideration for others using the library is expected. Students failing to abide by library procedures may lose library privileges.

Renewal of Books:

Students may renew books as often as needed as long as someone else has not put the book on reserve.

LITTERING

A clean school shows pride and cooperation among students. We have many visitors at Grand Bay, and we would like to make a good impression on them. There are trash cans in all classrooms, hallways, and outside. Please help us keep your school clean by keeping litter off the floor and the campus, as well as, not writing on the walls in the hallways or bathrooms. Writing on walls is considered vandalism and will result in disciplinary action.

LOST AND FOUND

Be sure your name is in INK on all property, clothing and in personal books. Do not bring extra money, electronic equipment or jewelry to school. If you find an article that does not belong to you, turn it in to your teacher immediately. If you lose something of value, tell your teacher and, if possible, go to the office and check to see if anyone has turned it in.

MAKE-UP WORK

Students have the responsibility for making up missed assignments. The general rule is that a student has one day to complete make-up work for each day’s absence. However, continued absenteeism will be reviewed and definite dates established for work to be completed. A student who is in attendance the day before a scheduled test/quiz will be expected to take the test/quiz the first day they return to school. If an absence is pre-determined, the student shall discuss the absence with his teachers and complete the make-up work directed by his teachers. School must have a 24 hours prior notice for requests for assignments and they are generally only collected if a student is going to miss 3 days of school. Parents should call the school office to request assignments and pick up books and/or materials.

MEDICINE

School personnel are not allowed to give any medications to students without a doctor’s prescription and a permission form from the parent on file in the office. Parent may get the appropriate form from the school nurse or attendance clerk. You must bring the medicine to the school nurse immediately upon arrival to campus. You must have a pass from your teacher to come to the nurse’s office to take your medicine. Medicine bottles must be clearly labeled with the student’s name and directions for dispensing. Further information is provided in the Mobile County Public School System Code of Conduct.

MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS

Due to the large number of students on campus and the limited number of clerical personnel, the school will not accept or deliver messages to students except in case of an emergency. Telephone messages resulting in the notification of students are very disruptive and will be handled during transition times, break, and lunch.

OFFICE PROCEDURES

• You must have a pass anytime you come to the office.

• You are only allowed to use the school phone for emergencies.

• Students and teachers are not called out of class to come to the phone.

SPORTS

Grand Bay Middle School offers the following sports: Archery, Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Football, Softball, Track and Volleyball

Alabama’s Sports Officials Bill

Alabama has become the 16th state to toughen the punishment of angry

sports fans who attack games officials, coaches, and administrators. The bill became a law on March 31, 2002. It creates new crimes of harassing, menacing and assaulting sports officials, coaches and administrators. The punishments are harsher than normal for convictions for harassment, menacing and assault. For example, a second-degree assault of a sport official, coach, or administrator could result in a sentence of up to 20 years. The legislation applies to all levels of athletics from church softball to professional sports.

To participate in any extracurricular activities, including athletics, students must be eligible under the “Academics First” guidelines adopted by the Alabama State Department of Education. Students participating in athletics must also be eligible under the guidelines of the Alabama School Athletic Association and adhere to the Grand Bay Student Athlete Code of Conduct.

STUDENT PLANNER

The planner for Sixth Graders is to be kept with you during the school day. It is to be used to keep track of your assignments, grades and events. It is to be treated as a textbook and daily grades will be assigned for having the planner in class. Grades, assignments, and events are to be placed in the planner daily.

STUDENT TRANSPORTATION

No student may transport himself/herself to school on or in a motorized vehicle (i.e. tractor, car, motorcycle, scooter, four wheeler, etc.).

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

Due to illness, professional obligation, personal business, or other emergencies, it is sometimes necessary for the school to employ a substitute teacher for the regular classroom teacher. Students are expected to be courteous and helpful to the substitute, who has all the responsibilities of the regular teacher.

SUSPENSION/DO NOT ADMIT

If you are suspended or put on the “Do Not Admit” list, this means you cannot return to school until your parent or guardian comes for a scheduled conference. You also may not participate in school functions if you are suspended.

TESTING

All students take End of Quarter Tests (EQTs) at the end of each quarter. These quarterly tests assess each child’s knowledge of the material taught during that quarter. The EQTs count 20% of the quarterly grade. All students will take the State Mandated Test in the spring. Class tests, projects, reports, and a variety of other assessments are used to determine your child’s academic progress each quarter.

TEXTBOOKS

Some textbooks can be loaned to students for their use during the school year. The student pays for workbooks and other supplies. Textbooks are to be kept clean and handled very carefully. VANDALISM

Our school buildings and equipment cost taxpayers (everyone) money to construct and maintain. Any student who destroys or vandalizes school property will be required to pay for losses or damages. If a student willfully destroys or damages school property, the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. If a student should damage school property by accident or notice something damaged, it should be reported to a school staff member immediately. Chewing gum is prohibited because of the damage its misuse causes to furniture, textbooks and other equipment. Students are not permitted to sit inappropriately on school furniture or to hang out of windows. Writing on the walls, whether hallway, gym or bathroom stalls, is considered vandalism.

VISITORS

All visitors to Grand Bay Middle School must come to the office before going to any area of the campus. This includes parents, former students, and friends/relatives of Grand Bay students. No student may bring visitors to school for a day. Anyone who comes on the campus during the school hours without registering in the office will be considered trespassing.
