The Chancellor’s authority is delegated by the Board of Trustees. Faculty Onboarding Position Description XE "Position Description" \i , Full-Time FacultyDallas College faculty are expected to perform the duties enumerated in the formal Job Description; to fulfill their responsibilities in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Board of Trustees and outlined in the Board Policy Manual; and to comply with both state and federal policy.Dallas College seeks faculty who strive for excellence, are committed to continuous student learning, and demonstrate passion and skill in effective teaching and learning facilitation. Adjunct Faculty ResourcesPart-time faculty workload maximum is nine credit hours or less per week (18 clock hours or less per week) during the fall and spring semesters. During the Summer 1, Summer 2, Winter and May term an adjunct can teach (1) 3-hour or one (1) 4-hour course. Workload includes preparing for and teaching assigned classes, providing consultation to students, conducting examinations, and submitting grades to the College (activities may vary for nontraditional instruction). Onboarding will guide adjuncts through processes to get started with their teaching assignments. Adjuncts must complete Dallas College Required Training and are encouraged to attend faculty professional development offered through the Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL). Contracts XE "Contracts" \i and Compensation XE "Compensation" The Faculty Role page on the Faculty One Stop website includes information about faculty contract and compensation, forms, links, and salary schedules. The Faculty Salary Schedule, extra service compensation, market disparity stipend, and reclassification rules are available on Human Resource’s Faculty Resources page. Criminal Background Check XE "Criminal Background Check" \i (CBC)The hiring process for faculty includes a criminal background check managed by Human Resources and authorized by Board Policy.Benefits XE "Benefits" \i (Medical, Dental, Retirement XE "Retirement" \i , and Related Services)The Human Resources Insurance Options page has current information on health, life, and other insurance options, including board policy, prescription drug plan, flexible spending accounts, workers’ compensation, continuation of benefits, death-of-employee procedures, and retiree benefits. Full-time staff participate in the Teachers Retirement System of Texas. Full-time faculty and administrators have the option to participate in the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) or Teachers Retirement System of Texas (TRS). One of the earliest and most critical decisions a faculty member will make upon accepting employment with Dallas College is the selection of an appropriate retirement program. Faculty have one opportunity to make a retirement program selection, and this decision cannot be changed later.Please note: This document references retirement options simply to indicate their significance for new full-time faculty. Faculty should consult with the Human Resources Office on all matters pertaining to benefits, including selection of an appropriate retirement program.Full-time employees do not contribute earnings to Social Security; this fact may be especially relevant at the point of retirement. Teachers Retirement System of Texas (TRS)The Teachers Retirement System of Texas XE "Teachers Retirement System of Texas" \i (TRS) administers retirement benefits based on length of service and salary level. Both the employee and the State contribute a percentage of income to this retirement fund. Vesting with TRS occurs after five years of service, and employee deductions are taken pre-tax. TRS members must meet eligibility requirements to retire.Optional Retirement Program (ORP)The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) is an alternative to the Teacher Retirement System of Texas program. ORP is similar to a 401K employer matching program in that it allows the employee to exercise more control of the retirement investment with contributions from both the employee and employer. Participants are vested on the first day following one year of employment. The employee and state contribution rates are established by the Texas Legislature. ORP members do not have an age/service minimum before they can retire. Computer Use Policy XE "Computer Use Policy" \i The Computer Use Policy and Regulations are included in the Dallas College Board Policy Manual. All users must use these resources and facilities in accordance with College policies and procedures as well as all laws. Failure to fulfill these responsibilities may lead to the cancellation of computer access, other disciplinary action by the College, and/or referral to legal and law enforcement agencies, in accord with existing College policies and procedures. For additional information, please refer Board Policy, section DEA (Local).Evaluation Process for Faculty: Individual Action Plan XE "Individual Action Plan" \i (IAP)The Human Resources SharePoint site page on Employee Evaluations includes an entire section on the faculty evaluation process with forms, processes, board policy references, discipline review, and contract non-renewal information. Employee Grievance Process XE "Employee Grievance Process" \i The Employee Grievance Policy states, “If an employee faces a work-related problem or condition and believes is unfair, inequitable, or discriminatory or not able to adequately perform the job, and cannot find a solution, the employee has the right to file a formal complaint.”Please refer to Employee Rights and Responsibilities for additional information. Faculty Recognition XE "Recognition" \i AwardsDallas College honors the achievements of individuals and teams of employees for their initiative, innovation, and expertise. The Full-time Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding full-time faculty for academic, scientific, and scholarly achievement and their dedication to students. The Innovation of the Year Award recognizes faculty, staff, and administration who have implemented transformative programs, concepts, partnerships, and activities. Reassigned Time XE "Release Time" \i , Supplemental Employment XE "Supplemental Employment" \i , Premium Pay See Faculty Resources on the Human Resources SharePoint site for essential information on supplemental employment, release time forms, and related to active employment and board policy. Leave XE "Leave" \i Please see Paid Leave Benefits for faculty leave information, including vacation leave, sick leave, personal leave, sabbaticals, and more. Sabbaticals XE "Sabbaticals" \i Sabbatical leave allows faculty the opportunity to take a leave of absence from their position in order to engage in a special project, study or travel that will benefit the institution, the students, and the employee. Please see Paid Leave Benefits for more information about sabbaticals.Resignation XE "Resignation" \i Any employee serving under a term contract may resign and leave employment of the College, provided the employee submits a letter of resignation in accordance with administrative regulations and the General Requirements provisions in Board Policy, section DMD (Local). All resignations are submitted in writing to the Chancellor or designee. The employee will provide reasonable notice and include in the letter a statement of the reasons for resigning. A prepaid certified or registered letter of resignation is considered submitted upon mailing. Termination XE "Termination" \i The Board Policy Manual includes termination information and guidelines. Classroom Information and SupportSyllabus XE "Syllabus" \i Each faculty member is required to have a course syllabus posted online for each course they teach prior to the beginning of each registration period. The required Dallas College syllabus template is available on SharePoint. Per House Bill 2504, the syllabus must:satisfy any standards adopted by the institution;provide a brief description of each major course requirement, including each major assignment and examination;list any required or recommended reading; andprovide a general description of the subject matter of each lecture or discussion.See Upload Your Syllabus for further details and instructions.Please note that the syllabus must also be accessible to people with disabilities (see below).Accessibility XE "Accessibility" \i and Universal DesignThe College is committed to supporting faculty and staff as they strive to proactively address learning barriers for all students and create inclusive learning environments. See Virtual Office Hours on Faculty One Stop to learn more.Textbooks Orders and IncludED XE "IncludED" \i Faculty GuideThrough the IncludED program, the price of most required learning materials — including textbooks, online publisher content, software, art supplies, science lab kits and even certain medical supplies — is included with the price of Dallas College tuition. Students are automatically enrolled in the program when they register for classes. Electronic course materials will be available on eCampus, and hard copy materials will be shipped to the student’s mailing address on file. See the IncludED Faculty Guide for information about the time-sensitive process for adopting learning materials for your course, support resources, and frequently asked questions.Attendance XE "Attendance" \i Certification XE "Certification" \i Dallas College is a participant in federal student financial aid programs and is, therefore, required to verify that students begin attendance in each class for which they have registered. As part of this process, the instructor of record must complete attendance verification for financial aid each semester. At Dallas College, this process is called "certification". See Certify Your Classes on eConnect for further details and step-by-step instructions.Attendance Policies100% Online Courses: The online instructor should establish clear expectations around class participation and allow students to demonstrate regular engagement through asynchronous learning. Students should not be required to attend synchronous (live) sessions that meet at a specific time.On-Campus Courses: The on-campus instructor should have clear policies around class attendance and participation that convey how these elements of the class may affect the student’s grade.Student Progress Reporting XE "Student Progress Reporting" \i Student Progress Reports are required for courses five weeks or longer. Instructors teaching courses 15 weeks or longer will submit reports on eConnect twice during the semester. Instructors teaching courses five-to-14 weeks long (including eight-week courses) will submit reports once.See Student Progress Reports for further details and step-by-step instructions.Field Trips XE "Field Trips" \i Field trips must have a relevant contribution to course objectives, and where possible, the field trip should be included and described in the course outlines/syllabus. They should be scheduled and designed to avoid extra classroom activities that impose undue hardships on students. Substitute Teaching XE "Substitute Teaching" \i Board Policy, section DNB (Regulation) includes a process for securing a substitute in the absence of the Instructor of Record. Final Examination XE "Final Examination" \i Please refer to the Academic Calendar for the final examination dates for each term.Grades XE "Grades" \i See the End-of-Semester Checklist for information about course grades and faculty requirements. The instructor of record must submit final grades to eConnect according to the College’s established timeline.Student ProcessesDisruptive Classroom Behavior XE "Disruptive Classroom Behavior" \i Dallas College cares about its students’ academic, emotional, and physical success. The CARE Team was created to accept referrals regarding individuals in distress, struggling with basic needs, experiencing unexpected crises or whose behavior raises concerns about their well-being or that of others. The CARE Team also addresses behaviors or mental, emotional, or psychological health conditions that may be disruptive, harmful or pose a direct threat or risk to the health and safety of the community.Drops and Withdrawal XE "Drops and Withdrawal" \i Policy and ProceduresStudents may drop or withdraw from class in person or online through eConnect. Concealed Carry XE "Concealed Carry" \i Concealed Carry refers to SB 11, which permits a licensed to carry (LTC) holder to carry a concealed handgun on the campus of an institution of higher education in Texas.What Concealed Carry Allows:The law permits only licensed to carry (LTC) holders to carry concealed handguns on campuses.The law allows an institution to adopt rules or regulations that prohibit license holders from carrying concealed handguns on certain areas of campus, in a building or portion of a building, as long as the rules and regulations do not have the effect of generally prohibiting a license holder from carrying a concealed handgun on campus. Effective notice must be provided with respect to any place where handguns may not be carried. Concealed weapons are prohibited in childcare centers, polling places on the day of an election, sporting or interscholastic events, board meetings, counseling services, health care facilities, laboratories with potentially hazardous areas, areas where prekindergarten through grade 12 students convene, fitness centers, College vehicles, and where prohibited by law or contract.
