The basis of ballet can provide a dancer with the foundation of being a versatile dancer Jazz - is a freer, more rhythmic style, less emotionally restricted and classical than ballet. It draws from all the other forms of dance techniques, blending them in clean rhythmic movement. Tap - the quickest and surest way of developing coordination and rhythmic ability. Children trained in tap excel in math and social activities with the ability to think fast and memorize quickly. Contemporary- the art form that uses the body as a means of communication through movement. Contemporary is based on ballet and jazz styles that expand through emotions and expressionsTJT- Tap, Jazz and Tumbling for ages 3-5. A style taught to introduce young children to all types of dance, enabling them to choose which course to pursue as they become strong dancers.Hip Hop-Is a very physical form of jazz modernized through trend dances including pop- lock, heavily utilized in music videos and visual advertising. It is easily today’s hottest dance style.Studio Rules and AttireNo gum, food, or drinks EXCEPT WATER, is allowed in the classroomsHair must be secured and worn out of the face in a bun or a high ponytail. This is mandatory and will been forced.NO STREET CLOTHES! Proper dance attire and shoes are required. Participation will not be allowed if dressed in street clothes.No parents allowed in the classrooms except during scheduled visitation weeks.Student placement in classes is at the discretion of Teri Wilkerson and the teacherALL CONTEMPORARY students are required to take a Ballet or Technique class.NO PHONES are allowed in class. Phones MUST be on silent mode and remain in dance bags.BALLET - black or pink leotards with black, pink, or white tights, pink ballet shoesTAP/JAZZ -black dance wear with black tap shoes for tap, tan jazz shoes or dance paws for jazz.TJT - any dance wear with ballet or soft shoes until after Christmas, then tap shoes are required.HIP HOP -Sweats or leggings with Hip Hop or tennis shoes. She received her Dance Masters Certification in 1985. Since 1992, she has choreographed and/or directed over 180 musicals and plays for ACU, HSU, McM, AHS, WHS, and the Historic Paramount Theatre. She has received the Excellence in Choreography Award from the American College Theatre Festival, the Region 6 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Award for Outstanding Choreography, as well as the Presidential Teaching Award from the United States Department of Education. Her students have gone on to successful careers in all aspects of the performing arts.?She is the founder and Artistic Director of Chameleon Performing Arts Company. Teri has trained with professional teachers and choreographers from LA to NY. Her students have gone on to successful careers in all aspects of the performing arts, including Broadway, professional dance companies and countless national tours.?Co – Owner - Kirby Altimont Kirby Altimont (Wilkerson), an Abilene native, has been involved in the studio since before her fist steps. Kirby was part of teaching staff from 2007 until she moved to Dallas in 2017. She was a member of Chameleon Performing Arts Company and was Director of Core Hip Hop Company from 2014 – 2017. Her time in Abilene included choreographing for Abilene High and Wylie Choirs, and musicals as well as guest choreographing for various performances in town. She studied with Monsters of Hip Hop and has taken classes at Millennium Dance Complex in LA and Broadway Dance Center in NYC. Kirby continues to be involved in all aspects of Dance Discovery.Kourtney Kickhoefer is a Business Administration Major at Hardin-Simmons University from San Antonio, Texas where she attended Dance Plus San Antonio for 15 years. She is trained in tap, jazz, ballet & hip-hop, but enjoys jazz the most. She competed on her studio competition team for 8 years where she won several titles and outstanding achievement awards within her division. Kourtney attended LA Dance Magic 4 years in a row, where she worked with many choreographers such as Jackie Sleight, Christian Vincent and Albert Cattafi. She has been on the Spurs Dance team for four years where she held the title of Captain for two years.?“My teaching style is interactive, supportive and transparent. I always encourage my dancers to have a voice in the studio, ask questions, and participate in all activities.Olivia Stewart has been dancing for 6 years?with Dance Discovery Studios. She is trained in contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and technique. She was a member of the Cooper Cougarettes for 2 years where she competed and placed in dance competitions and officer camps where she was able to study under Jenny Rian, director of the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blues. While a part of the team, she performed on Carnival Cruise Line. “My teaching style is going step by step through choreography, making sure everyone understands, answering any questions, while challenging those I teach”?Sylva Uwimana is a Pre-Med Biology major/exercise science minor from the Ivory Coast Prior has been dancing for 12 years. He is a member of the Chameleon Performing Arts Company and Core Hip Hop Company and has studied at Artistic Dance Exchange. Sylva also participates in a dance group that he created called 'SWIITCH' where they enjoy performing at local social events. Entering his halfway point in collegiate academics, he has been named into the Dean's and President's list and has future plans of becoming a Physical Therapist. “My teaching style is based on energy and freedom. I encourage expression and confidence in my student's movements, placing emphasis on free styling.” Rebecka Soliz, a native from Abilene, TX, has been dancing for fifteen years. She is in trained ballet, jazz, and contemporary. She was a member of the Cougarette drill team for four years, where she served as Senior Lieutenant. She has attended dance conventions such as Jump, where she studied under Travis Wall, Alex Wong, and Teddy Forance. She has performed in Hawaii, the Dallas Christmas Parade, and a Carnival Cruise. “My teaching style is based around creativity and feeling the energy of the room. I like to encourage my students to think outside of the box, and I love to see them grow as the dance year progresses.”Kirsten Aguilar has been dancing for 15 years. She has a diverse knowledge of dance and is trained in hip-hop, ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, technique, and tumbling. Kirsten was also a member of the Cooper Cougarettes for 4 years where she served as Lieutenant and Co-Captain. In her drill team experience she was a part officer camps and dance competitions where she competed and placed. Kirsten has also?traveled nationally and internationally to Hawaii and on a cruise to Mexico to perform. She has studied with ImmaBeast convention and also has studied in Burbank, California learning from professionals’ dancers such as Twitch, Janelle Ginestra, Jenny Rian, Sean Lew, Josh Killacky, and Mary-Ann Chavez. “My teaching style is to unlock my student’s fire for dance while going step-by-step through choreography, making sure all types of learners can grasp on to everything, while having a fun time, but getting work done in a challenging new way!”Lindsay Palmer is from Houston, TX and obtained a bachelor’s in psychology and a masters in Business in Administration. During her time at Abilene Christian University, Lindsay was a member of Sanctify Hip Hop Company where she served as Captain, and Shades Step Team. “My teaching styleKatie Greene, a native from Abilene, TX, has been dancing for 13 years where she has trained in the art of Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballet, and Tap. She was a member of the Abilene High Gold Rush Dance Team for 3 years. During her time with Gold Rush, she competed and placed with her solo performances. Katie, has attended Jump Dance convention where she studied with Mandy Moore, Misha Gabriel, Travis Wall, and Wildabeast. “My teaching style is hands on and comprehensive, and I love to push the limits when it comes to progress!” Domonique Gordon has been dancing for 8 years. He has performed with both Chameleon Performing Arts company and Core Hip Hop company. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University with a BFA in Musical Theatre in 2019. During his time at HSU, he performed as a Featured Dancer and Dance Captain for multiple musicals, such as Adam's Family, Godspell, The Wedding Singer, and Anything Goes. He has also choreographed Hardin-Simmons Little Women, as well as their Operetta The Merry Widow. During his time in and out of university, he has worked professionally as a dancer in both TEXAS! The Outdoor Musical in the Palo Duro Canyon, and The Lost Colony in Manteo, NC. He has danced in workshops at Artistic Dance Exchange, and has taken master classes under Shyla Pringle, Tom Richardson, Mollee Gray, Jill Marie, Timothy Raimondi, Omari Brown, and Hamilton Evans. He has taught at multiple Elementary Schools through the Young Audience of Abilene program, and has been the Assistant/Co. Choreographer for the Abilene High School musicals since 2016. The following year, the studio expanded to include two teaching rooms and became Dance Discovery Studios.?The studio became the home to the first and only jazz company, Jazz Trax Inc, in 1987; ?Writing/performing original dance dramas, dealing with the negative issues children face to provide an outlet and positive and constructive alternative. In 1995, the company expanded to include all styles of dance, combined with theatre and became Chameleon Performing Arts Company. Core Hip Hop Company was established in 2008 and was Abilene’s first to excel in this style of dance. Both companies have showcased some of the best and most progressive performers in this area.?Today, Dance Discovery Studios has continued the tradition of excellence as well as providing a safe space to all. We believe in the importance of physical composure, but truly value self-assurance; successful on the stage AND in life.Facility When designing our new space, our goal was to create a place that was inviting, inspiring, and felt like home to our dance families. Crisp lines and the stark contrast of black and white accents create visual interest that are gracefully balanced with warm finishes and natural foliage to create an atmosphere that feels exciting yet soothing. Our studio features spaces that cater to all aspects of a student, and their family’s experience at Dance Discovery. Dressing rooms, storage cubbies, freshly remodeled bathrooms, and a place to do homework complete with wi-fi access were all included to provide each student with a place they can develop both as dancers and as people. Perhaps the most important space within our walls is the dance studios. Dance Discovery features over 2,200 square feet of studio space divided amongst 3 classrooms. Our students’ safety is our top priority, which is why each studio is outfitted with top quality marley flooring over a sprung subfloor to protect our dancers from injury. Other studio features include multi-height barres and wall-to-wall full-size mirrors provide flexibility to cater to all sizes/ages of dancers and allow for an inclusive experience. State-of-the-art sound systems and TV’s installed in each studio provide the students with premium acoustics and the valuable ability to use technology for instant critique and feedback from teachers and peers. We offer a variety of environments for families to utilize while visiting the studio. From the expansive main lobby, to the colorful Lizard Lounge, the peaceful courtyard, or the studio classrooms, there is no shortage of places for our students and families to connect and foster a true sense of community within our doors. ................
