FALL FINAL CHOREOGRAPHY PROJECT

*The following is the criteria for the final dance project:

1. Create an original dance using one of the styles from this semester (Ballet or Modern or a combination of the two) or choose another style of dance of your choice (must get style of dance approved prior to working on choreography)

2. Dance from beginning to end should be between 1:30-2:00 in length with a minimum of at least 8 eight counts of actual choreography (More than 2 minutes is fine but must get teacher approval)

3. Must get your music pre-approved prior to beginning choreography and putting music on CD

4. Must cut your own music outside of class time or find a song within the required time frame

5. Final music mix/cut can be on a CD or on an Ipod, but must have your song on a CD for practicing in class that will be collected by the teacher at the end of each class

6. Must bring your own music box or Ipod player to class (Can leave it in the dance room closet; if there is no access to a music player and there are not enough players at school, groups will need to take turns with one)

7. No more than 6 people in a group

8. Costumes (this includes hair and make-up) or some sort of outfit that fit with the theme of your dance

9. Definite beginning and ending

10. Music Mapping Handout, Choreography Notes Handout, and Mini Program turned in on day of performance (These handouts are on my homepage)

*This project will be performed in front of class and will be videotaped. If you are absent on the day of your group’s performance, you will receive a failing grade on this project unless you make arrangements to make it up with all of your group members present.

GRADING:

Music Mapping Handout for your song and Choreography Notes for your dance-5 points

Mini Program for your dance- 5 points

Preparation of music-5 points

Variety in choreography (formations, levels/floor work, partner work, direction changes, floor space, ripples/canons/contrast in movement and use of the four categories of movement)-5 points

Costumes/Hair/Make-up- 5 points

Length of dance/8 Counts of Choreography- 5 points

Use of Class time-5 Points

Overall Performance of Dance- 5 points

Total Points Possible= 40 points (See Attached Rubric on Grading)

*Each person will have a role in this project. The following are the roles that will be assigned:

Costume Designer (s)-Responsible for organizing and finding the costumes (Determining hair and make-up) and creating and turning in mini program

Choreographer (s)-Responsible for creating the movement, formations, etc. and turning in choreography notes (However, all group members are responsible for offering ideas with choreography)

Music Director (s)-Responsible for putting the song (s) together/cutting the music and turning in music mapping handout of song (However, all group members are responsible for offering ideas on music)

*Determining Group Project Roles

First identify personality type (big picture person, detail-oriented person, empathizer, and dive-right-in person)-Most people are a combination of all four types of personalities-then choose your role based on your personality type (s) in addition to your strengths

Outline/Daily Lessons for Final Dance Project

Monday December 2: Introduce project/Go over criteria, grading, and dates (students need to have all worksheets for the final project printed out from Juhl webpage by tomorrow) and watch previous years dance projects; If time still left, have students look over all handouts for final project

Tuesday December 3: Go over music mapping (How to find the "eight count" of a song that is in 4/4 time) and do music mapping worksheet with selected song (each person has their own worksheet and will turn it in), go over choreography terminology and choreography suggestions handout and go over the four main categories of movement and do choreography activity; if time go over choreography notes handout

Wednesday December 4 : Go through Choreography notes handout if didn't get to day before, pick groups, define roles, bring possible music selections to class along with Ipods/music players and begin to finalize song (s) and map out music (If students were absent yesterday, have them complete choreography activity in order to demonstrate understanding of the four main categories of movement)

Thursday December 5: Begin finalizing song, map out music, begin/continue working on choreography and choreography notes

Friday December 6 : Music needs to be pre-approved on or before this day; Work on choreography and choreography notes (Have samples of previous year's mini programs/brochures out for groups to look at during class)

Monday December 9: (Music Deadline) Song or mix needs to be on a CD by this day in order to leave it with teacher after each class; Choreography/Notes and practice (Groups that do not turn in a CD to practice with or turn it in late or change music at last minute will have points deducted from their overall project grade)

Tuesday December 10: Continue working on choreography/notes and practice

Wednesday December 11: Choreography/Notes and practice

Thursday December 12: Choreography/Notes and practice

Friday December 13: Choreography/Notes and practice (Choreography should be almost completed by this day)

Monday December 16: Finish choreography and choreography notes handout and practice choreography (Reserve video camera for Friday)

Tuesday December 17: Practice running through entire dance (Assign order of line up for performances)

Wednesday December 18: First Dress Rehearsal and practice routine (bring possible costume ideas to class for teacher approval) Each group will perform in front of teacher in order of final show

Thursday December 19: Final Dress Rehearsal and practice routine (Come to class in costume) Each group will perform in front of teacher in order of final show

Friday December 20: Final Performance in Auditorium (Get dressed first (Costume/Hair/Make-up), then each group should have time to practice up on stage at least once prior to actual videotaping if time permits) Use big gray music box with Ipod cord for music

Monday January 6: Watch performances and complete Self-Group Evaluation Handout on project/Fitness Day

Tuesday-Friday January 7-10: Fitness Days (Last day to dress from semester 1 is Friday January 10)

Monday January 13: Collect Locks (Final Exam Day: Take written test and finish watching dances if not finished)
