Scholarship Information for Juniors

Students: Details for the following scholarships are available in the counseling office. Unless otherwise specified, the deadlines given are the programs’ deadlines.

1. The Illinois State Scholarship program is open to all juniors who are US Citizens and reside in Illinois. To qualify, you must take the ACT or SAT by the end of the third semester before you graduate. You don’t have to fill out an application. If you are a junior and you plan to graduate in June of 2010, then you will meet this requirement by taking the Prairie State Exam in April, because the Prairie State Exam includes the ACT. However, if you plan to graduate early, then you must take the ACT or SAT on your own, by the end of the first semester of your Junior year.

Please note, in order to collect the Illinois State Scholarship, you must attend a college or university in Illinois.

3. Scholarship Chicago offers the Chicago Scholars Program. This scholarship is open to

Juniors who demonstrate strong character, academic ambition and determination to succeed.

The scholarship is renewable for $1,250 per year, up to $5,000. The program also provides college readiness programs during your senior year and paid summer internships. Apply online at

chicago-scholars-program/. Your application will require an online application, three short essays, a photo (submitted online), a Counselor’s recommendation, a teacher’s recommendation, and a transcript. Application Deadline: January 31, 2010.

5. The Bank of America offers the “Student Leader” program as part of its Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. This is an internship program for current juniors. Students who qualify will get an 8-week paid summer internship at a local non-profit, and can attend a Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC. Apply online at neistudentleaders. You must have demonstrated a commitment to community service. Application Deadline: February 17, 2010.

6. From the Top and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation present the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. Eligibility is limited to classical instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers, ages 8 – 18. 25 student musicians are selected annually. Each receives $10,000 to purchase new instruments, equipment, and / or attend a summer music program; performs on a live taping of From the Top; participates in From the Top’s Arts Leadership Workshop. Applications must display exceptional musical talent, financial need, and academic achievement. Applications are available online at . Your application will include an application form, a School Report completed by your Counselor, a Music Teacher Recommendation, an audition recording (see the application form for specific requirements), copies of 2008 tax forms, and test scores. Juniors, Sophomores and Freshman can still apply. Deadline: March 1, 2010.

7. The Kohl's Kids Who Care Program awards scholarships to young people who volunteer in their communities. The program divides applicants into 2 groups: ages 6-12 and ages 13 – 18.

One nominee from each age group will be selected as a store-level winner for each Kohl’s store.

Each store-level winner will get a $50 Kohl’s gift card. 206 regional winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship, 103 winners in each age group. 10 $9,000 national scholarships will be awarded, 5 in each age group. 8. Jiffy Lube offers an essay competition for scholarships. There are two categories. "Your turn behind the wheel" is open to students enrolled in driver education during this school year. "Teen

Driver" is open to all other licensed teen drivers. There will be one overall recipient of $7,500 and 6 regional winters of $1,000 in both scholarship competitions. Your essay of 500 words or less should describe "what drives you now" (an idea, dream, plan or maybe a solution to a world problem). For full rules, please visit . Deadline for “Teen Driver:”

9. The Positive Coaching Alliance offers the Triple-Impact Competitor scholarship for Juniors who are athletes and who make contributions on three levels: Personal Mastery, Leadership and Honoring the Game. To qualify, you must have a GPA of at least 2.5. Two female and two male applicants will each win a $1,000 scholarship. Application forms are available online at

scholarship/application.aspx. Your application will require an application form (which includes a personal statement), a letter of recommendation from an administrator (this can be your Counselor), a letter of recommendation from your Coach and up to 3 testimonials. Deadline: May 1, 2010.

10. Nordstrom offers a scholarship program for Juniors. Five scholarships of $10,000 each ($2,500 each year for four years) will be awarded. To be eligible, you must be a Junior with an unweighted GPA of at least 2.7. Application forms are available online at scholarship. Your application includes your application form, a personal statement, financial statement, a transcript, a list of your community / volunteer activities, a letter of recommendation, and an essay of no more than 500 words. If chosen as finalists, you will be asked to participate in an oral interview. Application Deadline: May 15, 2010.

11. Student Paths presents $1,000 Education Awards. This is a sweepstakes that runs once per month. To qualify, you have to register at , or login to an existing account on .
