Government Appointed Historians of Western New York“Historians in pursuit of excellence – building a legacy!” WWW.August 2017Dear Historians and Friends, You are cordially invited to the 9th annual GAHWNY Fall Meeting, Saturday, October 14, 2017Rochester Club West@ Bohn’s, 5256 Clinton St./ RT 33, Batavia, NY 14020As you see from above, the GAHWNY Fall meeting will be held in Batavia, where we traditionally held our Spring meetings. We hope you will plan to share your day with us and be a part of this event. The full day of programming is designed to educate, engage and to enhance your skills as a municipal historian. Enclosed you will find all the program and registration information plus three important inserts. First is the flyer for our annual fundraiser, the gift basket silent auction. This has grown into a fun and profitable event, allowing us to continue the student history award. Please help us help local students by contributing to a basket, or working with other local historians to create a basket for the raffle. Also please take a moment to review the Julia Reinstein Career Achievement Award nomination form and submit the name and achievements of someone you feel is worthy of receiving this honor. Finally, a membership dues form for 2017 is included. I hope you will continue to support GAHWNY with your membership. We are pleased to welcome back to Western New York Devin Lander, the State Historian, who will be attending the meeting. He will provide us with a brief update on his office, and is looking forward to answering your questions and listening to your comments. Dr. Shannon Risk will help us better understand the role that Western New York played in the women’s suffrage movement. Many of our local communities had political equality clubs and hosted lectures by prominent suffrage speakers. This timely presentation will illustrate the prominent role of Western New Yorkers in the movement. Our own GAHWNY Board Treasurer Rob Lowell Goller, will give some excellent tips and advice for preparing an annual report, which is retained permanently by your municipality. Whether you are a new historian or a seasoned veteran, crafting an annual report is an excellent way to showcase your accomplishments, and this presentation will help you put your best foot forward.Don’t delay – be sure to get your registration in before September 2nd and enjoy our early bird discount. Shaw, President under Region 8 of the former Association of Municipal Historians of New York State (AMHNYS) declared October 7, 1989 to be JULIA REINSTEIN DAY. Julia was the Town of Cheektowaga Historian and was honored for her long and devoted service to Historians all across New York State. Julia worked long and hard to organize both Region 8 and the State Municipal Historians Association. She continued to promote history until her death in 1998. Her motto for our region was, “Historians in Pursuit of Excellence – Building a Legacy.” ???? Since that time?the?Historians of Western New York have?continued the annual tradition of recognizing historians who have continued to build upon the legacy of Julia Reinstein. Since the inception of GAHWNY in 2009 the Executive Council has solicited nominations from the membership at large (rather than just those in attendance at the Spring Meeting) and makes a selection based on overall career achievement. In 2013 the award was renamed the Julia Reinstein Career Achievement Award to better reflect the overall significance of the award. Recipients are awarded annually at the Fall Meeting and receive an engraved plaque. 1989? Julia Reinstein, Town of Cheektowaga Historian1990?
