Introduction to Health Care Data Analytics Course: A Catalyst for ProgressThe proliferation of health information technology has elevated the significant need for data management and analytics in VA and for the health care industry as a whole. It’s widely held that analysis of the massive amounts of data available today holds the key to unlocking a tremendous potential for improving health outcomes. Health care organizations have the capacity to analyze previously untapped data sources, including demographics, social data, and health trends to gain new insights. Analysis of this data can support improved clinical effectiveness through enhanced clinical decision support and improved population health management, as well as by advancing prevention and wellness and enabling personalized medicine. It is not surprising that health care data analytics was the #1 identified learning need in three separate VA Health Informatics (HI) workforce surveys. The VA’s Field Based Health Informatics Council also identified data analytics as a critical learning need for HI leaders and staff. Skilled data analysts are in high demand in both the public and private sectors. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment opportunities for operations research analysts were expected to increase 27% during 2012-2022 (this employment group includes health care data analysts). In light of growing demand, VA data analytics subject matter experts and health informatics staff (in conjunction with Bellevue College through funding from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)), developed an entry level course entitled: Introduction to Health Care Data Analytics. This 8-week online program is an introductory course providing foundational knowledge and skills in health care data analytics.
