Week 11: Plotting GPS data on the base map
Week 11: Plotting GPS data on the base map. Due date: At end of class period on November 3, 2008.
In order to plot your data on the air photo base map you will need to make an ArcMap compatible file. To do this you first need to make a table in Access. Then you will have to import that table in ArcGIS, and give it a coordinate system. Following are the steps:
TO MAKE THE ACCESS DATABASE:
1. Open Microsoft Access (it should be on your lab computer).
2. Click on File, then NEW for create a new database.
3. A new window will come up which gives a couple of choices on format for the database. Highlight the third choice which is “Create table by entering data”.
4. Go to file and click on “Get External Data”, then “Import”. You will need to find your excel spreadsheet and click on it. This will import it into Access.
5. Another window will come up that says “import spreadsheet wizard”. Click on “show worksheets” and then click next.
6. Click on “First row contains column headings”. Click next.
7. For “Where do you want to store your data”? click on “In a new table”, then click on next.
8. For next window, click “do not import filed” and click next.
9. In next window, click “No primary key”.
10. In the last window, name your data file.
11. You will now have a table in Access.
TO IMPORT INTO ARCGIS AND GET IT TO PLOT:
1. Open your ArcMap basemape and add the Access datafile. When you add the file, it will show you a window with the tables listed. Click on the table that you made and click “add”.
2. In ArcMap, highlight the file, go to “Tools” and then click on “Add XY data”. A window will come up asking for the table name (you can browse for it). It will also ask for the X field (this is the converted Longtitude data) and the Y field (this is the converted Latitude data). After you have chosen the correct fields you will need to set a coordinate system. Do this by clicking edit, then import. You can import the coordinate system from any of your air photo or topo files that you used to make the base map. Click OK.
3. You should see the gps points plotted on the basemap. However you will need to change them to a shapefile. To do this right click and choose “Data”. A window will come up – asking for the outshape shapefile. Give your shapefile a name, click “Ok”, then “yes”. This will be added to your Basemap.
4. If you can’t get your points to plot then there may be a coordinate system issue.
