Ascus Biosciences---- Microbial Community Data Scientist

San Diego, CA

The Company

Ascus has grown from humble beginnings in a Mojave desert airplane hangar to now having the largest animal associated microbial datasets in the world, multiple lead products under development and field validated globally, and a core team of dedicated and innovative individuals across the world working to support our vision of helping livestock producers feed the world. We remain rooted in a practical mindset that emphasizes applying our platform, an engine of creative destruction, to meet the urgent need for higher performing and natural microbial products in the animal feed additive sector.

Microbial communities are foundational to our world, yet exceedingly diverse and complex. While modern methods for analyzing and interpreting these complex ecosystems are novel relative to the tools available to microbiologists a decade ago, they do not enable a truly functional understanding of the role of individual strains in an environment. The current methods of analysis generally rely on a statistical measurement coupled to broad fixed assumptions around metabolism and population constants that often result in neither an optimal nor reliable product target.

The Ascus Technology Platform transforms the analysis of microbial community systems away from the ubiquitous statistically predictive approach practiced today, to a functionally descriptive approach ? the result is not only a more rational and direct analysis of what takes place in these complex microbial ecosystems, but more importantly, the identification of microbial strains that are the most efficacious for desired mechanisms of commercial, health, environmental, and societal value.

The Job

High--dimensional and temporal omics analytics are and always will be core to our company capabilities, and we are seeking an exceptional data scientist to join our team. You will be a key contributor and critical to the success of the company. The main tasks you are expected to contribute to are:

? The analysis of a variety of sequencing data types--amplicon, metagenomics, and metatransciptomics of mixed microbial communities; whole genomes and transcriptomes of pure cultures. Illumina sequencing familiarity is a must, nanopore sequencing familiarity is a nice--to--have.

? Analysis and interpretation of animal / field--experiments. Some field work may be required.

? Development of bioinformatics pipelines, workflows, and visualization tools.

The challenges will be diverse, as will be analytical methodologies.

You

You are a very strong coder, with significant experience in Python. You are deeply familiar with a broad range of omics analysis paradigms, and know the pulse of developments in the field. Ideally you have proven expertise in the analysis of multi--omics temporal data sets, as well as enjoyment of and talent at data interpretation and visualization. You have domain knowledge in molecular biology and microbiology as well as microbial ecology. You are comfortable with the microbiome, and familiar with

current research in the field. You enjoy new challenges and learning new things rather than a narrow routine and defined set of goals. You can adapt to the situation rather than relying on a fixed set of skills. You have the judgment to balance innovative and practical methods to achieve problem resolution. You can solve difficult problems and get things done.

You should have a track record of success in your education and projects, and have these characteristics and skills:

? A PhD in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering, Computational Biology or related field and interesting relevant experience. MS and BS degrees will be considered if the applicant has significant microbiome and computational biology experience.

? Experience in the field of microbiology, molecular biology, and microbial ecology.

? Expertise in analysis of large datasets related to bioinformatics, omics datasets, diagnostics, etc.

? Expertise working with sequencing data, common sequence file formats, and bioinformatics

tools. ? Expert proficiency in Python. Experience with R and Java are a plus.

? Additional knowledge in a broad range of sequencing technologies.

? Proven track record of independent thinking & innovative approaches to problem solving. ? Proficiency in SQL as well as NoSQL database technologies a plus. ? Full fluency (verbal and written) of the English language is a must.

Other Requirements:

? May be required to travel up to 25% of the time. ? Should be capable of walking, bending, and prolonged sitting and/or standing during work
