UNIVERSITY OF MAINEJOB DESCRIPTION Title: Integrative Data ScientistDepartment:EPSCoRReports To: Director of EPSCoRDate: November 2020PURPOSE: The Integrative Data Scientist will support faculty and scientists in applications including omics, bioinformatics, and computational biology in a variety of biomedical, ecological, biological, and engineering research programs. The Integrative Data Scientist will work collaboratively with researchers on the experimental design, data management, analysis, and visualization of large data sets. In this collaborative role, the Integrative Data Scientist will serve as a consultant, trainer, or analyst depending on the needs of the research team. Other activities include writing methods sections and preparing figures to help prepare grant applications and scientific manuscripts.ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:Provide expertise to research faculty teams on applications including omics technologies and best practices for the analysis and visualization of those data.Assist faculty research teams with the experimental design of studies to assure rigor and reproducibility.Conduct and document analyses of data that includes algorithm implementation and programing using best practices.Implement and run analysis pipelines for high-throughput data on high-performance computing clusters.Evaluate data for quality assurance.Train faculty, students and professional staff on computational methods.Contribute to the preparation of grants and manuscripts.Works effectively and cooperatively with other members of CORE staff, UMaine administration, the campus community, and external clients and customers. Develops and maintains professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.Performing other reasonably related activities as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:Required: MS in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, or other related field with 5+ years of relevant experience.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Demonstrated experience in the analysis of high-throughput data.Experience in data integration, algorithm development, programming, and evaluation of analytical tools.Working knowledge of a variety of relevant computing languages, such as R, C/C++, Java, Python, Perl, and Bash, as well as a willingness to learn other(s).Strong knowledge in statistical software and language (e.g., R, SAS, MATLAB).Familiar with distributed computing, database (e.g., SQL), and cloud services. Database programming or dashboard experience is a plus.Self-motivation and excellent time management skills.Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational skills, and be a strong team player.Preferred: PhD/MS in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, or other related field with 2+ years of relevant professional experience.Successful project management experience in a higher education setting.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May supervise support staff, including student workers. WORK ENVIRONMENT/DYNAMICS: The position supports activities dealing with research, training, and outreach, and requires substantial computer skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and interactions with the research computing community. Candidate must have the ability to successfully complete tasks within a dynamic, evolving organization.WORK SCHEDULE: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Due to the nature of the position, work beyond regular hours (to include evenings and weekends) may be necessary for interim periods to meet the requirements of the position. The employee shall establish regular office hours and in consultation with the supervisor, adjust the work schedule as appropriate.WORK YEAR: Full-time, fiscal-year. POSITION TYPE: Soft money grant funded. Contingent on funding and successful performance.SCHEDULE FOR EVALUATION: In the initial six months of employment and annually thereafter in accordance with the UMPSA contract. JOB FAMILY/SALARY BAND: 07/05.
