Flour Baby Project - Mrs. Mantecon Science Class

Flour Baby Project

Congratulations, you are a parent!!! You will care for this “baby” as if were really a baby. You will feed it, change its diaper, bathe, and take care of your baby (all pretend of course, DO NOT WET your baby).

Babies born to teenage mothers are at increased risk of being born prematurely. So this project will use “preemie” floor babies weighing only two pounds

You will create a BABY BOOK 5 grades, that will contain:

← Birth Certificate – Parent’s Names, Date of Birth, Weight and Size at Birth, Child name, etc

← Marriage certificate if applicable.

← Baby Sitting Log – Times of feeding, diaper change, bathing, etc. (see template)

← Baby Log – Who took care of your baby, when and for how long (see template)

← Pictures (min of 2) per day with captions – Show off your Baby!

← Cost of Raising a Child – Job will be provided as well as income so stay within budget (see template). Include all sources of information.

← Child Abuse Facts – Answer these questions

a. Define Child Abuse

b. Give four types of child abuse and their description

c. What is the major factor in child abuse?

← Premature Birth Report (include all sources of information)

a Definition of premature birth (how many weeks)

b At least three factors in mothers that increase risk of premature birth (examples: age, nutrition, race, nutrition, marital status)

c At least three factors that increase risk of premature birth that occur during pregnancy (examples: multiple births, health of mother, stress, drug use)

d At least three effects on baby from being born premature (examples:neurological, respiratory, gastrointestinal, hematological, infection)

← What did you Learn Sheet (see template)

What you NEED to Know:

• Creating the baby log

a. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on your baby log. If possible, please submit it inside a report folder. If need be, you may staple the pages together.

b. Part of your grade will for appearance. Do a neat job of preparing your baby book. Type or write neatly. Position things (like pictures) in an attractive way on the page

• Care of Flour Baby – BABY LOG

a. Feeding every 3-4 hours (do not actually feed your baby)

b. Diaper change every 3-4 hours (you do not have to actually change diapers)

c. Daily Bath (pretend only, DO NOT wet your baby)

d. Keep your baby dressed at all times

e. This will be recorded in your BABY LOG

f. You MUST have your BABY LOG with you at all TIMES, and UPDATED

• Baby Sitting

a. You MUST be with your baby at all times

b. If you need to a babysitter, it CAN NOT be for more than 3 hours at a time and NO MORE than 1 babysitter per day

c. If you have PE, you can drop your baby off to be babysat by Mrs. Mantecons’ daycare service. This does NOT count against the 3 hours at a time or 1 babysitter per day.

d. Your baby will NAP during other periods, DO NOT PLAY with your baby during another teacher’s class. If a teacher informs me that you are distracted you WILL lose points

e. Automatic F if you are found without your baby or if you abuse or neglect your baby. NO EXCUSES! YOUR CHILD MUST BE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES

• Creating your flour-baby

a. Make your child distinctive yet appropriate (e.g.: no tattoos, piercing, hair coloring), with his/her own personality or style, without damaging or using tape or glue on the actual bag

b. Name your child an appropriate name.

• Caring for your child

• You should be extremely protective of your child. If a tragic loss or injury occurs, you will be responsible for clean-up (NOT the custodians.), reporting to instructors, and negotiation of the penalty. If someone else attacks your child find a teacher as a witness to spare you some penalty.

• You are not allowed to put the baby in your backpack, go anywhere without your baby, leave your baby in the care of anyone else, or let anyone abuse or neglect your child.

• If you are a “couple”, both parents must contribute to caring for the child. Point loss will occur if only one parent handles the baby in a joint marriage. It is important to learn that both parents are equally responsible for the children in a marriage.

• At the end of the project

• Turn in your flour baby (make sure that the parent name(s) are on the bottom of the baby. This will allow me to check for signs of abuse

• Turn in your baby log
