The Gettysburg Address is a very short speech given after the most famous battle fought not only in the Civil War but possibly in American history. The speech is not remembered for its length however, but on its depth. This lesson will help us to consider these stirring words written by President Abraham Lincoln.
Assignment:
1) Watch the video, The Great Task: Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
2) Answer the following questions:
a. Why did the director have the actors repeat certain lines?
b. Which parts stuck out or struck you the most?
c. Why do you think the speech was given?
3) Optional: Watch the first powerpoint slideshow:
4) Optional: Have students fill out the timeline outline while watching powerpoint
5) Watch the second powerpoint slideshow:
6) While watching the second slideshow, have students underline and define these repeated words: “great, new, here, nation, people, we, dedicated, consecrated, devotion, dead, living, but, cannot”
7) While watching the second slideshow, have students explain what they see as the “local focus,” the “national focus,” and the “global focus”
8) While watching the second slideshow, have students explain what they see as Lincoln referring to the “past,” the “present,” and the “future.”
9) While watching the second powerpoint, have students find the contrast between birth/life and death/dying
10) While watching the second powerpoint, have students find out what others have done and what Lincoln said the present people must do
11) Finally, students should complete their own version of the Gettysburg Address or write a summary of the Address
12) Lastly, they need to answer the question: Why do you think the address is still relevant today?
