State Librarian’s Report

1. Friends Legislative Breakfast, Wednesday, January 11, Washington Place

The Friends of the Library of Hawaii hosted legislators at their annual Legislative Breakfast on Wednesday, January 11at Washington Place. Governor Abercrombie attended and made remarks again this year, and the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) premiered our annual Year in Review video, which will be shown to the Board at a later date. During the event Senator Donna Mercado Kim was presented with the Friends Mahalo Award, which is given to a legislator who has shown strong support for the Hawaii State Public Library System during the preceding session.

2. Molokai Public Library Booth at Molokai Head Start Day

Molokai Public Library hosted a booth at the Maui Economic Opportunity Head Start 'Ohana Day, held Friday, December 16 at the Mitchell Pau'ole Center in Kaunakakai.

Staff had the opportunity to talk to parents, grandparents, caregivers and other support organizations about HSPLS and the services and programs we offer. They displayed library books about reading to young children and pictures of preschool programs held at the library and at the preschools the staff visited during the year, and distributed fliers, bookmarks, and for those who showed their library cards, free cds and books.

3. Libraries Host Drug Free Hawaii Awareness Month Displays

February is Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month, and thirteen libraries will host the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii’s display highlighting National Family Day, which encourages families to eat dinner together as a prevention strategy.

4. Online Self-Renewals Now Available

HSPLS borrowers are now able to renew most library materials online. To renew online:

1. Go to and click on “My Account.”

2. Enter your library card number and PIN

3. Access your “Items Out” list

4. Select the items you would like to renew by clicking on the boxes on the left side

5. The new due date will automatically appear, or a prompt will be given explaining why the item could not be renewed

6. Write the new due date on the book’s due date slip as a reminder

Some items are not eleigible for online renewal, including Hot Picks, DVDs, videotapes, and overdue materials. Renewals will not be allowed if the item has been requested by someone else.

5. Streaming Legislative Proceedings Accessible in Hawaii’s Public Libraries

The Hawaii State Public Library System HSPLS now offers access to live streaming video of select proceedings from the State House and Senate in most of our libraries. If you wish to view these webcasts, please call the library for additional information.

6. New Branch Managers’ Orientation

New managers for HSPLS branches received an orientation to the various duties and responsibilities required of their positions and met with administrators to increase their understanding of HSPLS operations from a managers’ perspective. New managers include (left to right below) Cynthia Chow, Kaneohe Public Library; Michelle Chun, Princeville Public Library; Glenda Berry, Makawao Public Library; Jessica Gleason, Kihei Public Library; and Gayle Hirohata-Goto, Aiea Public Library.

7. Branch Managers’ Meetings

HSPLS Administrators conducted meetings for Branch Managers on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. The meetings included ADA training in access to programs and services by Debbra Jackson, Planner and ADA Coordinator for the Department of Health’s Disability and Communications Access Board. Police Officers from each county made presentations on safety in the workplace and workplace violence.

8. Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapper Featured in Generations Magazine

Generations magazine, a publication intended for Hawaii’s senior population, featured an article on HSPLS’ Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH) in their December/January issue. The article noted that LBPH provides books and magazines in audio, Braille and large type formats, transcribing and radio reading services, and Digital Talking Book Machines and Digital Books.
