Save the Date for NAWJ’s 29th Annual Conference to be held ...
A Message from NAWJ’s President
Hon. Fernande (Nan) R.V. Duffly
Dear NAWJ Members,
Greetings, I have just returned from the mid-year meeting in Williamsburg of the Conference of Chief Justices. Many of the members of this organization of the chiefs of our highest state (and territorial) courts are members of NAWJ and it was an invaluable opportunity to meet the new chiefs and tell them about NAWJ. While there, in addition to attending several meetings and seminars, many of which focused on issues of mutual interest to our members, I met with supportive NAWJ members and obtained their commitments to attend the Third Annual luncheon with the Federal Caucus of Women Legislators, now scheduled for June 25, 2008 in Washington DC. With their help, I was able form an impressive committee of chiefs who will join me in a letter encouraging judicial leaders to attend this historic event. I also met with Colleen K. Killilea and Eileen Olds, from the Virginia chapter, and discussed areas of our mutual concern (Elaine Olds is this year's President of the American Judges Association -- congratulations Eileen!).
At a banquet in Boston this Tuesday, I will accept the Diversity Hero award, presented by the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. The recent article about that award quoted me as saying that NAWJ "is one of the most racially diverse organizations I belong to." I leave the next day for the ABA mid-year meeting in Los Angeles, where I plan, among other things, to make brief presentations about NAWJ at the meetings of the Commission on Women, Minorities Commission and the National Conference of Bar Presidents; attend the Spirit of Excellence lunch; and participate on the NAWJ co-sponsored panel: "From Diversity to Advancement: Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Success in the Legal Profession." On February 19, I will join Dru in Chicago to attend meetings of the Friends Committee, the Judges Committee (co-chaired by Cheryl Cesario, Sophia Hall and Jane Craney), and to meet with our event speaker Scott Turow, to plan NAWJ's Midwest Regional conference taking place in Chicago August 28-30, 2008.
