Examples

Change to a decimal:

(a) Two fifths. The denominator 5 is a factor of 100.

Therefore 0·40 or 0·4

(b) “One-third”

The denominator 3 is not a factor of 100.

Remember that the fraction line means ÷ .

Therefore we must work out 1 ÷ 3.

= 0·3333333333333333333333333333
