Letter and Sound of the Week: “Nn” Nyle Noodle

Themes of the Week: Halloween

Words of the Week: can, go

Dear Kindergarten Families:

Halloween excitement is in the air! We are having fun with many activities around this event, and we will be decorating our treat bags and a haunted house centerpiece for our party next Monday!

I will be sending your conference time home this week to put on your calendar. I have already received most of your requests and I’m making the schedule now.

Language Arts: We are reading many Halloween stories and poems. We looked at and discussed each student’s leaf collection and nature items as they came in and we hung them in the room.

Letters to review at home: Ss, Mm, Rr, Tt, Bb, Nn

Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can. go

“Juicy” vocabulary from “When Sophie Gets Angry, Really, Really Angry”: snatch, furious, comfort, welcome

Reading Workshop – Our readers learned how to take care of books and follow the reading workshop procedures each day. They are enjoying a little quiet reading, while I am able to meet with individuals on their own personal reading skills.

Math: We are practicing patterns and the children made a spider with patterned legs and pasted a pattern strip. At the end of this marking period some of our goals include being able to recognize and write the numerals 1-10, count to 30, recognize and make and extend AB patterns, and know positional words (ex.: above, below, first, middle, last, etc).

Science: Last week your young scientists sorted items by their texture, using words to describe how things feel. This week they estimate and then compare the weight of different objects using a balance scale.

Technology: The students are enjoying the computer lab weekly, learning to type in their login names and passwords, working with some fun, educational software. They interact with my classroom Smartboard by highlighting, circling and underlining different parts of a sentence, counting with the 100 chart, and singing our calendar songs. They use educational software on the Smartboard, and every day they have a 15-minute computer center in the classroom that include the 4 PCs and an ipad.
