Recreational Sports

Overview:

In this course, we will explore many different lifetime sport activities such as: Tennis, Ultimate, Pickleball, soccer, volleyball, badminton, Frisbee activities, cricket, Flickerball, yard games, new games, dance, and golf. Our goal is to prepare you for a lifetime of fun activity.

This class is designed to enhance or maintain a high level of fitness through lifetime sports. You will improve or enhance cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body composition, and relaxation. Students will participate in a predetermined fitness activity: fitness walking, running, circuit training, Nordic walking, spinning, fitness games and other fitness related activities on Tuesdays and Fridays. While also receiving those benefits through the specific sports and games that we play.

The goals of the course:

1. Know understand basic rules and strategies of all activities.

2. Refine and develop skills in each activity.

3. Encourage and participate with positive sportsmanship.

4. Follow safety precautions and guidelines.

5. Improve or maintain current fitness level.

6. Cooperate with others in a positive social setting.

Methods:

This course will operate with the integration of skill building, small game activities and fitness participation. While we will present information every week (on rules, strategies, and concepts of these activities), the course will depend largely on small and large group participation. We expect everyone to participate both in discussion and participation. Being prepared means coming to class appropriately dressed, on time, and ready to educate your mind, body, and soul.

How each standard will be specifically assessed:

I Can Move Correctly:

- Biomechanics Poster assignment

- Perform all 5 biomechanics to teacher: forehand swings, backhand swing, serves,

- Frisbee toss- forehand, backhand passing to a target

- Define and give examples of each of the 5 biomechanical principles

- Teaches a partner a skill using the 5 biomechanical principles.

- Throw a ball with correct form

-Tennis forehand, serve

- Volleyball forearm pass

- Golf putt and swing

- Soccer instep pass and trap

- Badminton smash, serve, and clear

- Pickleball serve and forehand

- Three ways to fake out

- Defensive positioning

- Ready stance

- Use of spin bikes

- Use of Nordic walking sticks

- And additional skills and strategies

I Can Train Me:

- Define and give examples of S.P.O.R.T.

- S.P.O.R.T with a skill

- Rules, scoring, and strategies of tennis, Pickleball, badminton, cricket, Ultimate,

soccer, Flickerball, and golf.

- Defensive strategies applied

- Offensive strategies applied (includes running routes)

 

I Participate Regularly:

- Log sheets

- Daily-observed participation; 50%

- Running as teacher enters gym; "instant activity" observed by teacher

- Pedometer use in class; 2000 steps

- Heart rate monitor in class (intensity level)

- Dress down (also in standard 6)

 

I am FIT:

- Pacer, Mile, 12 min run, push-ups, crunches, sit and reach

- Meets healthy fitness zones (ungraded)

- Fills out and analyzes goal sheets; fitness goals from Pre tests, etc.

-30 minute run without stop final

 

I Can Play Fairly

- Written test- fill in examples of level 1, 2, 3 or Pyramid of Active Participation

- Do we hear them swear?

- Have we heard them talk back?, sit out of game on purpose, put downs

- Written test- 4 characteristics of active listening

- Written test- 4 characteristics of observable effort; what does it look like?

- Written essay- What is meant by I Can Play Fair?

- Observable respect towards facilities and equipment

 

I Value:

- Dressed down in appropriate attire

- Active before class (instant activity)

- IM Assignment
