BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP STUDY QUESTIONS

BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP STUDY QUESTIONSIn preparation for Sunday, December 28, 2014 Passage: Galatians 5:19-26Memory Passage: Galatians 5:22-25DAY 1 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGERead Gal. 5:19-26. In the prior section (vs. 16-18) Paul highlights the strong enmity that exists between the flesh and the Spirit. By way of review, how would you define or describe “flesh” as Paul intends it to be understood in this whole section. When Paul says that the works of the flesh are “evident,” or “manifest,” to whom are they evident? To the sinner, others, God, or all the above? Many think that the list of the works of the flesh can be categorized into three or four groups? How would you categorize them and what would be your heading for each group?DAY 2 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGERead Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:9-11. Briefly define each of the “works of the flesh” and briefly explain why each is a work of the flesh. Since Paul does not give us an exhaustive list of the works of the flesh, think of a couple more works of the flesh that are not on the lists in Galatians and Corinthians. Which of the works of the flesh do you think is more prevalent in our society today? Why? Are there periods in history when some sins are more prevalent than others? In answering this question see also Hebrews 6:4-6. If the elect child of God cannot lose his or her salvation, is Paul’s repeated warning that “those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” a real meaningful warning for professing Christians? Why doesn’t Paul ‘soften’ this statement, as us preachers are wont to do, by saying something like, “But if you are the true elect, it doesn’t matter anyway?” Does Paul or Jesus or the prophets say that anywhere in the Bible? How do warnings like these help you as a Christian? Since Paul is not saying that if you have committed one of these sins you will forfeit your heavenly inheritance, what is he saying? DAY 3 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGERead Gal. 5:19-26. Verse 22 introduces the alternative to the works of the flesh. Here, however, Paul doesn’t speak of the “works of the Spirit,” as one would expect, but of the “fruit of the Spirit.” What is the difference if any?Why isn’t the fruit of the Spirit described as “evident” or “manifest” as is the case with the works of the flesh (v. 19)?Is the list of the fruit of the Spirit able to be grouped into categories like the works of the flesh above? What would be your categories?DAY 4 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGE Read Gal. 5:19-26. Briefly define each of the “fruit of the Spirit” and briefly explain why each is a fruit of the Spirit. Is this an exhaustive list? Can you think of other fruit that you would have added to the list? What does Paul mean when he says, “against such things there is no law?” What may have motivated him to add this phrase? Who, according to verse 24, “have crucified the flesh?” How and when did this crucifixion of the flesh take place? What are the implications of this for believers?DAY 5 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGE Read Gal. 5:19-26. In verse 25, what does it mean to “live by the Spirit” and to “walk by the Spirit?” Are these two different activities? Is it possible to live by the Spirit and not walk by the Spirit? How does becoming conceited serve to provoke one another in verse 26? There is a fine line between envy and appropriate ambition. Discuss!
