Predictive Services Discussion: Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are expected today across portions of the northern and central Plains behind a cold front. This front will move through the Great Lakes today and Northeast Saturday with light to moderate mixed precipitation. Across the Southeast, gusty winds are also forecast today through the weekend, but recent rainfall is expected to mitigate much of the fire threat. However, elevated to locally critical conditions are possible across central and southern Florida this weekend where rainfall has been scattered and light. Meanwhile, strong upper ridging will continue over the West into the weekend with record high temperatures.
Early next week, a deep upper trough will move into the West and then emerge onto the Plains midweek. Light to moderate precipitation, with high elevation snow, is likely across much of the West Monday into Tuesday. Ahead of the trough, elevated to critical conditions are expected to develop over the Southwest and adjacent High Plains Monday, then spread to much of the southern and central Plains midweek. Farther east, widespread precipitation is likely mid to late week from the eastern Plains to the East Coast with severe thunderstorms possible from eastern Texas and Oklahoma into the Southeast.
