Conic Section/Polynomial Calculator Art Project
Objective: To create a picture on the graphing calculator using conic sections, polynomials and lines.
Use at least 1 of each conic section (circle, ellipse, hyperbola, parabola) and 1 polynomial of degree 3 or 4. Lines are optional. The more conic sections and/or polynomials you use, the better the grade. You must use 10 equations total.
To get started, design your picture on graph paper first. Then, using template #1, write out the corresponding equations for each conic in standard (vertex) form and each line in slope-intercept form. You may use the regression feature on your calculator to find the equations of your polynomials.
Using the boxes in template #1, show your work solving each conic equation for y.
Using template #2, write out the equations to be typed in the calculator, which will reveal your picture. Double check to make sure you have the correct equations by testing your list. On the due date, you will exchange lists with a classmate and enter each other’s equations in a calculator to display the picture.
This will count as a test grade:
1 circle, parabola, ellipse, hyperbola, polynomial
(8 points each) – 40 points __________
Extra conics/polynomials (2 each) – 10 points __________
Creativity and originality – 15 points __________
Accuracy (10 correct equations) – 10 points __________
Neatness (list of equations/picture) – 10 points __________
Followed directions – 10 points __________
Tested by a classmate – 5 points __________
Total value of project – 100 points _________
