Prison shift costs schools

BY CHERYL EBERWEIN If some Plymouth-Canton-Nbrthville officials arc harking the slate's recent takeover of the Detroit House of Corrections (DeHoCo) as the "next best thing to closing the facility," officials in the Plymouth-Canton School District aren't convinced.
Administrators for the schools say slate adoption of the county.facility will cost, the district an estimated $772,000 in annual revenue: The loss, which could affect the district as early as April, is the result ol a drop in the number of total students enrolled in PlvmouthCantonschool programs.
The Plymouth-Canton School District has provided adult education classes for inmates at DeHoCo since 1956. Classes have ranged from shop and welding to swimming, GED classes, business classes and secretarial training.
Last year approximately 170 inmates were enrolled in adult education classes, bringing the total number of students in the district to 15,770. '
