Introducing Dell OpenManage Dell OpenManage combines innovative simplicity in design with intuitive usability and operational efficiency to perform essential hardware management tasks in multivendor operating system and hypervisor environments. OpenManage automates basic repetitive hardware management tasks — discovering, monitoring and updating for enterprise servers, storage and networking — from a single, easy-to-use, one-to-many console. A key feature of OpenManage is its ability to monitor Dell PowerEdge? 12th generation servers with or without a systems management software agent. Although agents can be powerful tools for managing infrastructure elements, they are OS-dependent, take up significant network and processor bandwidth, and are extra software that IT administrators must install, configure and test. OpenManage communicates directly with the server’s embedded management, Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 7 (iDRAC7) with Lifecycle Controller, to enable agent-free remote management and monitoring of server hardware components, such as storage, networking, processors and memory. No processor cycles are spent on agent execution or intensive inventory collection, and an agent-free environment also enhances system security. To maximize Dell systems’ health, performance and uptime, OpenManage delivers essential hardware element management including:Automated discovery, inventory and monitoring of Dell PowerEdge servers, EqualLogic? and PowerVault? storage, and PowerConnect? switches Agent-free, automated server monitoring and BIOS, firmware and driver updates for Dell PowerEdge servers, blade systems and internal storage Management of PowerEdge servers within Windows?, Linux?, VMware? and Hyper-V? environments Context-sensitive link and launch management of Dell blade chassis, EqualLogic and PowerVault storage, and PowerConnect switches Dell Management ConsoleDell Management Console (DMC) with Altiris? Server Management Suite from Symantec? provides sophisticated, centralized data center management capabilities that offer greater flexibility and expandability, detailed information about your IT environment and report-building options to create customized reports.Use Dell Management Console for basic management of Dell hardware Add Altiris Server Management Suite and other Symantec management plug-ins available through Dell Software and Peripherals for additional management functionality, including operating systems, applications and other IT infrastructure assets. Take control. Drive efficiency. Get the most from your IT resources.EATURES ProductDiscovery, Inventory and Reporting: -Holistic view of the IT environment. User can choose from device tree view, graphical reports, or exportable tables and drill into any device to see in-depth hardware inventory data.Hardware Monitoring: - Proactive heartbeat monitoring on user-defined schedule as well as synchronous event reception for Dell? systems. In our case as it is the first time we will be selecting it NOW.Once the search is completed, you can double click on the Task Instance Details.Click on close to close to window.Close the Discover your network IE Window and you will get the initial configuration screen. Now you may proceed with Inventory the Devices in your network.Click on Inventory the devices in your network.A new IE Window opens up, prompting you to run Agentless Inventory Wizard. One the first page do not make any changes and select the defaults, click on next.Type in a name for the task and click on next. The next screen is about the schedule, Select now and click on finish to execute the task.Double click on the task to show the result.Click on close to exit.Since this is the first time for agentless inventory you might not get appropriate results.Close the Agentless inventory Home.SNMP CONFIGURATION: -The next most important thing is to configure the snmp settings via the group policy so it can be applied all the servers.First we configure the SNMP TRAP Service to start automatically. The below screenshots are the Second we need to configure the SNMP Services via GPO.The following screen shot is displaying the SNMP Communities, Permitted Managers & Traps for public community. All these settings are configured via the GPO.The first screen shot shows which SNMP Communities are configuredThe second screen shot shows the Permitted managers (IP Addresses of the Hosts). The third screenshot shows also the host configuration which will receive the public community traps.Click on OK once to complete the GPO edit and save the GPO ConfigurationNext we need the SNMP Service to start automatically, Click on Preferences Control Panel Settings Services and select to add SNMP TRAP from the list of services,. Make the settings as displayed belowClose the GPO Editing window.Refresh the GPO View and review if the settings are done correctlyNext we can proceed with the Symantec agent installation.Symantec Agent Installation: -A Batch File has been created for this purpose which can be accessed from \\mvcsdellmgmt-ss.\DellAgent\agent.bat.The following commands are present in the batch file.dism /online /enable-feature /FeatureName:SNMP - Enables the SNMP Feature.dism /online /enable-feature /FeatureName:WMISnmpProvider Enables the WMI SNMP Feature.AeXNSC.exe /install /ns=MVCSDELLMGMT-SS. Installs the Symantec agent pointing to the DELL MGMT Support Services (10.1.29.148).Lastly the the command which identifies the physical server to be a Dell Server is by installing the OpenManage.Click on Next, Accept the License and click on next again,Select Custom and click on next.Select all the options and click on next.Installation summary is shown below, click on Install to proceed with the Installation.Click on finish to complete the installation.A New Shortcut is placed on the desktop named as Server Administrator. Double Click to load the Dell OpenManage. As the SSL Certificate is local you will get a error in IE about trusting the site, Click on Continue to this website. A Security warning is prompted, Click on OK to continue.OpenManage Server Administrator logins automatically for using the current logged in credentials, if the current use is not an administrator. Not an AdministratorPlease provide administrative credentials and if logging into the domain, do not place a check mark on Active Directory Login.Logged in as a AdministratorOnce logged in the Console can show you if there is any problem with the server due to hardware reasons.Click on Main system from the left hand menu to display basic system health.Click on storage to view the basic information with a list of available tasks.Currently the CERC Raid controller is not up to the latest accepted firmware level. We will push the update using the Dell Management console. You can close this window for now.Discovering Devices: -Moving back to the DMC, we now need to discover the initial servers. Login to DMC using the credentials used during the installation, as mentioned it has administrative priviledges on the DMC.Click on Home from the top menu and select Discovery and inventoryNetwork Inventory. This will take us to Discovered device Classification, which shows the results from the previous run which we had configured.Since this document stated that you type in a name for the Discovery task as we are going to scan the computers once more.Double Click on the task name and view the entries. If required modify it to your needs. And click on run nowThe pane immediately shifts to task Runs click on the curved green arrows to refresh the view.. After the search has completed it should show you the following. If the below is not shown, please refresh the page. Now that we have our 2 hosts detected, we can proceed with the agent initialization.During this exercise I had faced a lot of issues for getting the agent contact the server, The following tools was used for troubleshooting, Remote Altiris Agent Diagnostics (RAAD). I has also been copied to \\mvcsdellmgmt-ss\dellagent\raadv2.The forums also indicated that you need to remove the ssl settings from IIS for the Default Website. case you want to look at how many dell computers have been discovered so far, you can click on Manage from the top menu go to computers.
