Introduction

Currently there are 70 students in the Exceptional Children’s Program at the Cape Fear Center for Inquiry. There are a variety of disabilities represented in this group of students. Specifically there are 27 children who are Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired and Orthopedically Impaired. These children are spread among nine classrooms from Kindergarten through Seventh grade. Currently, the classrooms have a variety of computers with a variety of operating systems and applications. Some classrooms have Apple computers that are older than ten years. They run very basic games. Some classrooms have I-Macs that are two to five years old that run OS IX. The classrooms in sixth and seventh grade also have one to two Dells per room that operate using Windows 98’. The Dell computers have very few software applications on them that are effective for students to use other than Word. All of the classrooms have access to only one centrally networked printer. The Exceptional Children’s teachers have small resources rooms where they pull together small groups of children. They do not currently have any technology available to them to use that would assist students in having access to educational opportunities. The status of the classroom computers does not assist in the implementation of Individualized Education Plans for the students with disabilities.

The computer lab has 20 computers that operate using Windows 98’. The current applications that are available in the computer lab do not address the needs of the students with Visually Impairments, Hearing Impairments and Orthopedic Impairments. The current status of the computer lab does not follow ADA, NCLB or IDEA requirements for students with disabilities. The school is requesting funding to support the creation of an ADA compliant work station to be set up in the computer lab. The workstation will be equipped to meet all of the educational and assistive technology needs for students with visual, hearing and physical disabilities.
