ExorcismSubmitted by:Submitted to: Aidene S. SalasMrs. Mylene NarraHUMSS 1 – Faith EAPP TeacherBackground of the StudyDo you believe in ghosts? Spirits? Or even Demons? Do they really real? Is there any proof that can prove that they are real?In this world, there are many mysteries that haven't been found and solved. No one in this world can discover it all in a blink of an eye. There are many questions that the answers are nowhere to be found. Although sometimes the answers for some questions are already in front of you, you just can’t see it with your naked eyes.Exorcism is very well-known in different countries. Most priests and paranormal experts who are allowed by Christian and Catholic Church have right to perform it. It depends on the spiritual beliefs of the exorcists if it may be done by swearing an oath, dictating prayers, performing a ritual or simply by commanding it to leave in the body of a person in the name of the Divine power. However, the belief that demons exist and can possess is just stuff of fiction and horror movies, for entertainment – but also it is one of the most widely-held religious beliefs. Most religions claim that humans can be possessed by spirits, an evil one and worst, a demon and offer exorcism to remedy this kind of threat. How do the term “Exorcism” spread all over world? What was the reason? Does is it really real that some demonic spirit can possessed a human body and can be a threat to the life of the one who got possessed? Why do such thing like possessing and Exorcism have rooted and performed? Exorcisms continue to performed, often on people who are emotionally and mentally disturbed. Whether those undergoing to exorcism are truly possessed by spirits and demons is another matter entirely. Exorcism is perform by a people with a strong faith. To the extent that exorcisms work, it is due to the power of suggestion and psychology: If you believe you’re possessed (and that an exorcism will cure you), then it just might. To exorcise thus means something placing the possessing spirit under oath – invoking a higher authority to compel the spirit – rather than an actual ‘casting out’. This becomes when the demonic entity is adjured to leave the person, not by the authority of a priest but instead of the High Power, for example, the Trinity, “in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”As it clear from testimonies referred to, no magical or superstitious means were employed, but in those early centuries, as in later time, a simple and authoritative expulsion addressed to the demon in the name of God and more especially in the name of the God crucified, was the usual form of exorcism. But, as time goes by, some symbolic signs have been employed, such as breathing, or laying hands on the subject or making the sign of the cross (The Trinity). The sign of the cross (The Trinity) that briefest and simplest way of expressing one’s faith in the Crucified and invoking His Divine power, is extolled by many Fathers for its efficacy against all kinds of demoniac molestation.I love watching Horror Movies together with my sister most especially at night. Most of horror movies that we already watched are all about exorcism. For example, Conjuring 1 and 2, a true to life stories of demonic possession. I do think sometimes why is it always because of playing spirit of the glass begins everything, begin to get possessed a person. That’s why it got my interest and eager to obtain more knowledge about Exorcism and seek for some solutions to get prevent to it.Preliminary Literature ReviewExorcism is the religious or spiritual practice of purportedly evicting demons or other spiritual entities from a person, or an area, they are believed to have possessed. Depending on the spiritual beliefs of the exorcist, this may be done by causing the entity to swear an oath, performing an elaborate ritual, or simply by commanding it to depart in the name of a higher power. The practice is ancient and part of the belief system of many cultures and religions. ()According to Mohr, M. D. and Royal, K. D. (2012) cited that in Christianity, exorcism is the practice of casting out demons. In Christian practice the person performing the exorcism, known as an exorcist, is often a member of the Christian Church, or an individual thought to be graced with special powers or skills. The exorcist may use prayers and religious material, such as set formulas, gestures, symbols, icons, amulets, etc. The exorcist often invokes God, Jesus and/or several different angels and archangels to intervene with the exorcism. A survey of Christian exorcists found that most exorcists believe that any mature Christian can perform an exorcism, not just members of clergy. Christian exorcists most commonly believe the authority given to them by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (the Trinity) is the source of their ability to cast out demons. While in Catholic Christianity, exorcisms are performed in the name of Jesus Christ. ()However, In the The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist by Matt Baglio, in Catholic practice the person performing the exorcism, known as an exorcist, is an ordained priest. The exorcist recites prayers according to the rubrics of the rite, and may make use of religious materials such as icons and sacramentals. The exorcist invokes God—specifically the Name of Jesus—as well as members of the Church Triumphant and the Archangel Michael to intervene with the exorcism. According to Catholic understanding, several weekly exorcisms over many years are sometimes required to expel a deeply entrenched demon.Meanwhile, In Hindu tradition, beliefs and practices pertaining to the practice of exorcism are prominently connected with the ancient Dravidians in the south. Of the four?Vedas?(holy books of the Hindus), the Atharva Veda is said to contain the secrets related to magic and medicine. Many of the spells described in this book are for casting out demons and evil spirits. These beliefs are particularly strong and practiced in West Bengal, Orissa and southern states like?Kerala. The basic means of exorcism are?mantra?and yajna used in both Vedic and Tantric traditions. Vaishnava traditions also employ a recitation of names of?Narasimha?and reading scriptures (notably Bhagavata Purana) aloud. The main Vedic resource on ghost- and death-related information is Garuda Purana. ()Likewise, the key to any Jewish exorcism is having a truly pious man, an abba, baal shem, rebbe, or a rabbi, conduct the ceremony. This is in contrast with Mesopotamian and Greco-Roman practices, which generally use a physician. The process usually starts with the exorcist ritually purifying himself, either according to traditional Jewish practice, or by special means, such as anointing himself with water and oil. Some exorcists may invoke the presence of a maggid, or beneficent spirit, to assist them. The exorcist then uses the power of the demonic spirit’s own name to “overpower” it, by round after round of scripted ritual actions involving threats and rebukes, getting more intense and invasive with each effort. A few ceremonies on record reached the point of actually “beating” the demon out, but most simply involved verbal coercion. Jewish exorcisms are usually “liturgical,” using protective passages from the Psalms and other sacred texts. Antidemonic psalms have been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, though whether they were used in actual exorcism is impossible to know. (article/jewish-exorcism/)Furthermore, Exorcism in Islamic way called Ruqyah which is Arabic, includes specific verses of Holy Quran and all lawful incantations that Muhammad peace be upon him told us in Hadith. These all lawful incantations and Quran verses termed as “Ruqyah” and it’s based on an authentic hadith, Imam Muslim reported in Sahi Muslim which Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said: ?“Present to me those who provide curing by the way of ruqyah. There is no objection with it as long as it does not contained any polytheism.” ()In addition, in Taoism, Exorcism plays a very large part in the system. Exorcism is often seen as "ghost busting" in the west but it is not what it is only about. Ghost busting is of course one of the many things they do in exorcism, but they can also exorcise many things such as negative energy, negative chi, and even evil spirit, demons, evil magic, and even some rare magic like "goo" and "gong".? These are all things that they have to exorcise to get back "normal".?In general, they exorcise anything that is negative.?Exorcism is not chi gung, it is not about "chi", it is about magic. Exorcism cannot be done by a normal person because they do not have the special magical power to do so.? If you try to use chi which is your natural?energy?that you are born with, you will end up in very deep?trouble. What?happens is the "chi" you have is not condense and powerful enough to withstand any evils or negatives and if you use it against or on the evils, it will get suck up by them and become their food instead.? If your "chi" is?strong enough, why will you have these evils and negatives on you anyway,?they should be not even able to harm you and get on you at the first point, right??If you got problems and that means your?"chi" is already shattered by the evils and it have successfully break in into your body and so you have no way to fight against it unless you got a stronger and more condense form of energy.? In Taoism, they do have this magical power that can fight off any evils for you, that is what we called "Faat" 法. () Thus, in medicine?and?psychology?do not classify possession as a mental illness, but rather as a?misdiagnosis of different psychological conditions. Although validity of exorcism would be a tough argument for?theism, it surprisingly isn't brought up in debates very much. It could be that even the theists realize exorcism is?bollocks, or it's a?taboo?theme among them. Or perhaps it's one of the few areas where they understand that what seems obvious to them isn't obvious to other people. Given as they often do appear to elicit some sort of response from the person undergoing the exorcism, and given that not everyone undergoing an exorcism wants to be undergoing an exorcism (such as those who are?homosexual?for obvious reasons) one theoretical argument from a scientific perspective could be that the effect of people yelling and screaming at you is enough to elicit an emotional response. ()Nevertheless, in Orthodox tradition, exorcism is the rite of prayer which expels demons from a person or physical object. The most common use of exorcism in the Church is at the reception of a catechumen—a convert to the church—which is most often included at the beginning of the baptismal rite. An exorcism may also be performed if it is believed that a person is suffering from demonic influence. ()Hence, in the Shamanism, the concept of possession by evil spirits and the practice of exorcism are very ancient and widespread. In shamanic healing, exorcism is needed when a negative entity, called a?demon?in Western society, takes hold of a person's?soul. When a shaman performs an exorcism, the demon may try to engage the shaman in conversation, reveal secrets that the shaman may be ashamed of, or use physical, energetic, and telekinetic attacks against the shaman. The only thing that will protect the shaman is her firm connection to, and faith in the power of her divinity or spiritual gift. ()On the contrary, In?Sikhism, exorcism is not permitted and is seen as a violation of the?“Sikh Rehat Maryada”?(Code of Conduct), since Sikhs do not believe in demons, ghosts, or the sort. If a Sikh person were to be found practicing exorcism, an ordained “Ghiyanhi” (priest) would have the power to strip that individual of any ties to the Sikh faith. Jainism also does not believe in exorcism. ()Concept Exorcism is the act or process of?exorcising. It is a process on expelling spirits and demonic spirits that possessed a human body.
