Nelson Wilfred Eves Of Wolfe Island, Ontario slipped away peacefully after a tremendous year long struggle at Kingston General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family on November 1, 2002. Nelson was born in 1931, and was the fifth of eight children born to George and Ethel (nee Sudds) of Simcoe Island. At the young age of 14, Nelson moved from his parents home near the light house with his older brother Roy to a farm near the foot of Simcoe where they farmed together for many years. During thi s time period Nelson commercially fished, went west on a harvest excursion, spent time at a logging camp, worked at the Kingston Grain Elevators, worked for Andre's Construction Co., and did water surveying which included a survey for a proposed brid ge site to connect the Island with the mainland. At the age of 28, Nelson married Doris Willard of Amherst Island in May 1959. A short time later Nelson sold his share of the farm to his brother and purchased the adjacent farm where he and his wife D oris raised six children. During the next thirty-some years Nelson operated a hog and dairy farm before turning to beef cattle, and continued commercial fishing. When ferry service was provided to Simcoe Island in the fall of 1964, Nelson became the first operator and remained the sole operator for the next ten years. In December of 1990, Nelson and Doris made a decision to leave Simcoe and moved to Reeds Bay on Wolfe Island. Winter ice crossing was getting far too dangerous for their coming ret irement years. Nelson retired from the ferry after 32 years of dedicated service. During his retirement years he and his wife took several trips that included Florida, Arizona, Texas and most loved of all, travelling across Canada to see Alaska. A wi sh to return to Alaska was always in his thoughts. Much loved husband and faithful friend of Doris. Loved deeply by his children Sherry and her fiance Joe Dhaene of Simcoe Island, Rick and Peach (nee Janzer) of Wolfe Island, Connie and Lynn Moyse of Glenburnie, Randy and Lindsay (nee Field) of Simcoe Island, Bernice and her finance Mike Harpell of Kingston, and Reg of Wolfe Island. A deeply missed grandpa of Sarah, Colin, Joey, Jessie and Mikey. Surrounded by many bouquets of flowers a large gat hering of family and friends were received at the Duffus Funeral Home in Kingston, on November 3, and a service held in the chapel on November 4, 2002. The Reverend Andrew Chisholm officiated and was assisted by Father Eugene O'Rielly. Two favourite hymns "Amazing Grace" and "Shall We Gather At The River" were played. Nelson was carried to his final resting place at the Alexander Point Cemetery on Wolfe Island by his sons Rick, Randy, Reg, son-in-law Lynn Moyse, future son-in-laws Joe Dhaene and Mike Harpell.
