Dear potential student,

Thank you for your interest in the American School of Equine Dentistry (ASED). The ASED is a small, private school owned and operated by Raymond Hyde, D.V.M. and his wife, Hanina Hyde, EqDT/C. The School is dedicated to an educational program that promotes an understanding and recognition of the need for the performance of equine dentistry and maintenance, and instructs its students on how to perform these needed dental procedures. The course also provides a framework of ancillary and inter-related veterinary and equine science knowledge to establish the student as part of the equine health care team. This allows the student to become part of an interdisciplinary approach to maintaining the health, comfort and balance of the animals, and to enhance the performance and enjoyment of our client’s horses.

As horse owners become more educated about the benefits of proper equine dental care, the demand for such dental services continues to grow. Along with veterinarians, equine dental technicians are filling this need, often by performing the difficult, labor intensive tasks. Equine dental technicians are often self-employed or work part or full time for veterinary practices. The ASED’s teamwork philosophy depends on a strong veterinarian - technician bond of understanding, shared knowledge and skill. Therefore, the four-week course, Introduction to Equine Dentistry, is a broad program including classroom presentations, hands-on training performing equine dental services, observation of fieldwork done by the instructors in their daily work, and is provided in conjunction with Dr. Hyde’s general equine practice. Students will see and work with many types of horses from various uses during the course, since there is a large diverse population of horses in the school’s area.

Independent study is expected of the students using the available texts, articles, videos, skulls, etc. Pre-class reading materials are provided when your class deposit is received. The four-week course includes exposure to advanced dentistry concepts and procedures. Although the teaching will introduce the students to the use of power equipment and they will be instructed in their use, Dr. Hyde emphasizes learning the use of hand tools on both sedated and unsedated horses as well.

In addition to the fieldwork, our course includes studies in: GENERAL EQUINE ANATOMY; ANATOMY OF THE EQUINE HEAD; DENTAL ANATOMY; DENTAL DEVELOPMENT AND ERUPTION; AGING THE HORSE; MASTICATION PROCESSES; PERFORMING A DENTAL EXAM; PURPOSES OF EQUINE DENTISTRY; IDENTIFYING DENTAL PROBLEMS; DENTAL EQUIPMENT (USE OF, MAINTENANCE, AND ORDERING); THE ALIMENTARY (Gastrointestinal) SYSTEM; PERFORMANCE OF EQUINE DENTISTRY (BIT SEATS, FLOATING, WOLF TEETH, INCISORS; CORRECTING WAVES, HOOKS, RIDGES, ETC); DENTAL CHARTS; DENTAL PHYSIOLOGY; CIRCULATORY ANATOMY AND HEMOSTASIS; IMMUNOLOGY; CAUSES OF WAVE FORMATION; TMJ PROBLEMS; NON-DENTAL CAUSES OF POOR MASTICATION AND WEIGHT LOSS; MOLAR SHEARING; IDENTIFYING AND REMOVING CAPS; CONTAGIOUS DISEASES AND SANITATION AND USE OF DISINFECTANTS; USE OF MOTORIZED DENTAL EQUIPMENT; BITS AND BRIDLES; ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING YOUR DENTAL MAINTENANCE PRACTICE; BUSINESS ISSUES; UNDERSTANDING SEDATION AND ANESTHESIA; RESTRAINT TECHNIQUES; HANDLING HORSES SAFELY; EXTRACTION TECHNIQUES; NUTRITION AND FEEDS; NUTRITIONAL DISORDERS; EQUINE DENTAL TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS; MAINTAINING BALANCE (ORAL AND GENERAL); PSYCHOLOGY OF THE HORSE; BACTERIOLOGY, VIROLOGY AND MYCOLOGY BASICS (PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF CONTAGIOUS DISEASES); WORKING WITH HUMANE INVESTIGATORS AND SOCIETIES; A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EQUINE DENTISTRY; PROFESSIONAL ETHICS AND PRACTICES, AND GERIATRIC DENTISTRY.

Our teaching goal is to make it possible for our students to enter the field of equine dentistry with a solid knowledge of equine dentistry and the practical skills needed to serve the dental needs of horses.

Financial Aid Resources

The American School of Equine Dentistry is a small, private school. It is classified as a vocational, trade, professional, or career school because of the short period of enrollment required to complete the program, and because most of our students attend our school to start a new career or profession, leading to a part-time or full-time job.

Potential students interested in pursuing financial aid may consider applying through several avenues:

Veterans Administration – Available for those with V.A. benefits to obtain training for a new career. Please consult with your Department of Veterans Affairs counselor.

Business Loan – Apply to your bank or credit union for career school tuition and start-up equipment expenses to start a new business.

Vocational Rehabilitation – Many states and companies offer re-training funds to those individuals who have been injured or lose their employment because of “down-sizing”. The funds available often include an allowance for purchasing the necessary equipment for your new trade or profession as well as tuition fees.

Agricultural Education Grants – Check with your state or local agricultural departments or organizations for available student grants and scholarships.

We have had students attend our school that have used these resources .The American School of Equine Dentistry will be happy to assist you by providing any necessary information about our program to you or any potential source of funding in your application process. We understand that some loan officers or vocational counselors are not familiar with the equine dental profession, so we would be glad to speak with them if needed.

We are a small private school so our program unfortunately does not qualify for the Federal Pell Tuition Grants that are often available to students enrolling in major Colleges and Universities in the U.S.

Personal Loans – Family, friends, and employers may be a source of needed funds and are an option to pursue.
