EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

Under the administrative direction of the Secretary, Labor and Workforce Development Agency, the Director, Employment Development Department (EDD), administers the Workforce Service, Unemployment Insurance (UI), Disability Insurance (DI), Paid Family Leave, and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act programs.

As one of the nation’s largest tax collection agencies, the Director also administers the audit and collection of employment taxes from 1.5 million California employers, and maintains wage records for more than 18.5 million California workers. The EDD has an annual operating budget of more than 16 million.

The EDD has approximately 8,374 employees located at hundreds of service locations throughout the state, providing many important services to millions of Californians each year including:

• Assists California employers in meeting their labor needs

• Helps California job seekers obtain employment

• Administers the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program

• Provides unemployment, disability, and paid family leave insurance benefits to affected workers

• Supports State activities and EDD benefit programs by collecting State employment taxes (UI, DI, Employment Training Tax and Personal Income Tax withholdings)

• Provides comprehensive labor market information
