Letter from the Director

Donna S. Johnston, B.S., R.N. Director, Cancer Service Line

The Baptist Cancer Institute has had an active year of growth and community involvement. We began the year under the leadership of our Cancer Committee Chairman, John W. (Jack) Tyson, M.D. The Cancer Committee at Baptist Hospital comprises a devoted team of physicians from Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology and Radiology along with other allied health members specializing in Oncology Nursing, Palliative Care and Marketing. Together, this team ensures that the standards are being met for a quality program that is accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program.

An exciting development occurred this year when Baptist Health Care became part of the "Mayo Clinic Care Network". This collaborative relationship provides an opportunity for the Baptist Medical Group Oncologists to consult with the oncology specialists at the Mayo Clinic. This allows our patients to optimize Mayo Clinic expertise, clinical care resources and treatment options without the travel, expense and inconvenience of leaving our community. "We send patient information and records to the specialists at Mayo and receive a second opinion response within 48 hours. "This helps assure our patients that they are receiving the best treatment plan possible" stated Dr. Sherif Ibrahim, Baptist Medical Group Oncologist.

In 2013, we had several occasions to educate the community on cancer prevention and celebrate with cancer survivors. In June, we hosted our annual Cancer

Survivor's Celebration. Along with brunch and live music, patients and their families learn about the health benefits of fresh vegetables and herbs by the Escambia County Extension Service. Then, during the summer Pensacola Beach Air show we provided skin cancer screenings. We appreciate local dermatologist, Dr. Amy Pote-Watson for volunteering her time at this event helping to make the community aware of skin cancer and treatment options. In addition, education events were held throughout the community on topics such as breast cancer prevention, skin cancer prevention and overall health maintenance.

For the 3rd consecutive year, Baptist Health Care partnered with 94.1 Soft Rock Radio and Cox Media to host the Bras Across the Bridge event. The bridge walk raises awareness and money that is used to provide free mammograms to more than 250 women in our community who are without insurance or other ability to pay. Also during October, national Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Baptist Cancer Institute was the corporate sponsor for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. More than 15,000 walkers participated and more than $450,000 was raised for the fight against breast cancer.

Educating the community on cancer issues along with providing our patients with the best possible care are the fundamentals of our program. As we look forward to 2014, I am excited about all those that will join our program in treating and surviving cancer.

Cancer Committee Chair Report

John W. Tyson, M.D., general surgeon Cancer Committee Chair

On behalf of the Baptist Cancer Institute, I am pleased to present the cancer program's 2013 annual report. This report details the members of the cancer committee, the goals set forth by the committee and a summary of cancer registry activity. In addition, this report features a quality study on the treatment for Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLL) by Baptist Medical Group Medical Oncologist, Nutan DeJoubner, M.D.

In 2013, the cancer program maintains its Program Accreditation for meeting and surpassing standards set forth by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS-COC). This distinction of accreditation is recognized by The American Cancer Society (ACS) and the National Cancer Institutes (NCI) Cancer Information Service. Both institutions only refer patients to ACOS-accredited facilities because of the high quality of care demonstrated by meeting these stringent standards. This achievement was accomplished through the diligence of staff, administration and committee members.

In 2014, we will have a site visit and survey by a representative of the American College of Surgeons. One of the key components to quality care is weekly multidisciplinary cancer conferences. These conferences are open to all disciplines of Baptist Hospital medical staff for case presentation and professional support. In addition, a specialized conference is held to focus on the needs of patients with Head and Neck Cancers. These meetings are led by Dr. Kevin Botts and Dr. Jack Lurton , Head and Neck Surgeons. These conferences are attended by nurses, dieticians, social workers and other specialists that contribute to the ongoing needs of these patients.

Along with the Baptist Health Care Administration Team, I congratulate the medical staff, nurses, therapists, technicians and cancer registry staff on their accomplishments over the past year. Their collaborative efforts promote improved patient care and data reporting at the Baptist Cancer Institute, which is reflected in the American College of Surgeons recognition of our cancer program.
