LGBT Studies, Dr. Lee

Final Exam

Due Friday, May 20 at 5PM

Write a story about the experiences of an adult gay man, lesbian, bisexual male or female, or transgender person. Where are they from? Where do they live? Where and with whom do they hang out? What do they think about? Where do they work? What do they do for leisure? and so forth. In your story, you must:

Describe the kind of community in which this person lives. Describe how LGBT history affects the community, the differences of their community from heteronormative communities, the kind of media experiences the community provides, their community’s narrative about religion, sexual dynamics in the community, how race influences community experiences, and other things such as language, style, dress, behaviors, and mannerisms that are common there.

You must also describe at least two of the following aspects of their life.

a. What is or was their family life like? Describe this in terms of interactions with parents and other family members, reactions of parents if they came out, what their current family situation will be like, their sexuality, and the joys and/or challenges that they face living in a family or as a single in our society.

b. What was it like for them growing up? Describe this in terms of religious experiences, school experiences, friendships, personal joys and/or struggles, and sexuality.

c. How does the heteronormative society influence their life? Describe this in terms of influences of media, athletics, religion, marriage and family, body image, how laws affect them, and how they are treated as an LGBT person in the public arena.

Your story MUST draw from and truly reflect the readings, media, and discussions that we have had in class. This story should draw from at least 20 sources, but you do not need to reference them. I expect that better exams will be at least eight pages long. You must turn in a typed printed paper or a typed electronic copy via email (recall that in either case you are required to keep a backup copy). Good luck!
