First, let’s begin with describing the art work.

2. What objects, figures, shapes, etc., do you see?

3. Who is the artist?

4. What technique or mediums did the person use to create the art work?

5. Describe the elements of art that you see in the piece.

Second, let’s analyze how the art work is composed and organized. Look closely at the piece.

1. What area of the art work draws your attention (focal point)?

2. How would you describe the arrangement of the visual elements?

3. How were the principles of design applied to organize the content of the piece (balance, repetition, unity, movement, emphasis, variety, proportion)?

Third, let’s talk about the artist’s intent or purpose for the piece.

1. How does the art work make you feel?

2. What was the artist trying to represent?

3. What do you think the artist was trying to say? What message was the artist attempting to convey? Provide evidence from the art work to support your opinion.

Finally, based upon what you have observed and written, determine whether the art work is successful.

1. What is the quality of the piece?

2. Does it succeed in communicating the artist’s intent?

3. Would you want to acquire this work for yourself?

4. Would you recommend this piece to anyone else? Why or why not? Provide evidence to support your decisions.
