Who am I?

Goals:

• To help students understand the diverse groups or identities within themselves.

• Get students to think about which group membership(s) defines them more.

Time Required: 15 minutes

Exercise is the introduction to the diversity section.

Materials Needed:

Paper and pen

Instructions for Students:

1. Think about how you would describe yourself to someone who does not know you. Use up to 10 one-word descriptors. You can use words related to physical characteristics (e.g., I am tall), personality (e.g., I am friendly), race (e.g., I am Asian), relationships (e.g., I am a father), group membership (I am a business student), hobby (I am a NASCAR fan), or any other category that is important to you. This should take you about 5 minutes. After that time, stop and do not add to or change your list any further.

I am (a):

1. __________________________________________________________________

2. __________________________________________________________________

3. __________________________________________________________________

4. __________________________________________________________________

5. __________________________________________________________________

6. __________________________________________________________________

7. __________________________________________________________________

8. __________________________________________________________________

9. __________________________________________________________________

10. _________________________________________________________________

2. Which 3 to 5 words describe you best? Within this list, which ones are more important? Rank order your most descriptive words.

3. Using the circle below, make a pie chart using your 3 to 5 best descriptors. The size of each slice in the pie chart should reflect the importance of each of the words. For example, if you have 3 words, musician, intelligent, and red-head (probably not the words many of you are likely to use!), in that order, your chart may look something like this:

[pic]

Now draw your own pie chart! Who am I?

What does this chart tell you about yourself? Which aspect of who you are is most important to you? How would you react if any one of the dimensions you have used were used as the only way to describe you?

Write a 50-100 word description of your reaction and answer to these questions.
