Catalog Description:

This introductory course is designed for the acquisition of vocabulary needed to describe daily events and routine activities, as well as places, and things in an urban environment. The course also introduces students to various Spanish tenses and grammatical structures essential to effective communication.

Needs/Justifications/Goals:

This course meets the General Education, Humanities and the Arts requirements, Area C, for the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees for the transfer pattern for UC and CSU.

Elementary Spanish I

I. Catalog Description

SPAN 1, Elementary Spanish I 3 Units

This introductory course is designed for the acquisition of vocabulary needed to describe daily events and routine activities, as well as places, and things in an urban environment. The course also introduces students to various Spanish tenses and grammatical structures essential to effective communication.

II. Expected Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to perform the following activities with 70% accuracy.

A. Ask questions about and formulate responses related to various activities and functions of daily life, both conversationally and in writing, including telling time, identifying family members, describing people and things, expressing likes and dislikes, counting, describing the weather, and buying things in a food market or restaurant.

B. Indicate “possession” in conversation and in written exercises.

C. Describe events using the preterit tense in its regular and irregular forms.

D. Express preferences and obligations with appropriate vocabulary and phrases in conversation and in response to written exercises.

E. Use the future tense appropriately in conversation and written exercises to indicate future plans and events.

F. Use the present progressive and past progressive tenses in conversation and written exercises to indicate things that are in progress or have been in progress.

G. Use personal pronouns to refer to people and things previously mentioned in conversation.
