What are ways that we can use only words to create value in an image?What is value? Calligraphy?Procedure: Day 1Students will watch a Power Point on Michael Volpicelli and word artStudents will start by thinking of a hobby/ concept that they would like to drawBy taking a blank sheet of paper, students will begin brainstorming different words that they may useThey will fold the paper in half twice making four sections: Quotes, Descriptive words, Objects/ people relating, and otherDays 2-4Students will begin by lightly drawing the silhouette of their image on paper with a pencil.Students in Intermediate Art: will begin writing words with different text, font, shape, size, boldness and calligraphy to fill the silhouette of their image/ object/ place.Students in Advanced or Portfolio Preparation art classes: will begin to write out different words within their image, while arranging them in a manner that allows for different darks, shadows and highlights to take place. Highlights can be created by drawing out light and thin words that are spread apart from each other. Shadows or dark parts can be created by using bold text and placing the letters closer together.Once all of the words are written out, students will go over the words with markers using different sized markers as necessaryDay 5Once all of the traced words have dried, students will go back over the work with an eraser to take off any access pencil marks that may have been left behindStudents will mount their artworkClosure: After the projects are all completed, I will review with students and ask them: “What is value? What are ways that you used value with just words and letters?” “What is opacity?” “What is your image of?
