Descriptive ESSAY Assignment – A Favorite Place

Eng 21 Fall 2009 Illustration Essay Assignment – A Place That Has Changed

Directions:

Pick a place that you have observed as it has changed over time and, using illustration, show your audience both how it has changed and the significance of that change. You might choose a city you have lived in for many years, a school you used to attend, a place where you have vacationed, a relative's house, or any other place you are familiar with. Your essay should have a good thesis statement that lets your reader know your topic (your place) and your controlling idea (what you want to tell us about how the place has changed). It should have specific details that appeal to the senses and help your reader to feel as if he or she is actually at the place you are describing. You might want to try looking at photographs or other pictures of your place, both old and recent, as you write and brainstorm.

Your essay must have at least five paragraphs, and each paragraph should have a good topic sentence. Your essay must be at least two pages long. (This means that it should be down to the bottom of the second page.)

Use the outline provided to plan your essay before you begin to write.
