Lesson 3: Cinquain

Pennsylvania Academic Standards:

✓ 1.3.8 D Pennsylvania’s public schools shall teach, challenge and support every student to realize his or her maximum potential and to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to identify poetic forms (e.g., ballad, sonnet, couplet).

✓ 1.3.8 F Pennsylvania’s public schools shall teach, challenge and support every student to realize his or her maximum potential and to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to read and respond to nonfiction and fiction including poetry and drama.

✓ 1.4.8 A Pennsylvania’s public schools shall teach, challenge and support every student to realize his or her maximum potential and to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to write short stories, poems and plays (Apply varying organizational methods and Use relevant illustrations).

Behavioral Objectives:

Students will be able to:

✓ Recognize the form and characteristics of cinquain poetry by taking notes and analyzing sample cinquains.

✓ Compare the form of the cinquain poem to the haiku through class discussion.

✓ Construct a cinquain as a class on the blackboard.

Materials:

✓ Transparency

✓ Markers

✓ Blackboard, chalk

Motivation:

✓ Daily Oral Language

✓ First cinquain example

Instruction/Activities/Technology:

✓ Motivation (5 min)

• Pass out first cinquain example and respond. Model likes, dislikes and certain words or phrases that stand out.

✓ Give the form using the overhead, students copy as a notebook page.

✓ Pass out second cinquain example (mine), explain my thought process.

✓ Group Poem:

• I give the students a pair of words to start with.

• Brainstorm on the board descriptive words (categorize by syllables).

• Brainstorm verbs that the subject does (categorize by syllables).

• Choose words to create the poem

✓ (If time) Brainstorm possible topics on the board.

Questions:

✓ What is the form of the cinquain?

✓ What are some possible pairs of words that can be used in a cinquain.

✓ How is the cinquain different from the haiku?

Special Education Modifications:

✓ All handouts will be according to COLA standards and have three holes punched in order to easily be put into a binder.
