SCHOOL WELLNESS PROFILE

& IMPLEMENTATION TOOL

The Child Reauthorization Act of 2004 requires that every U.S. school district participating in the National School Lunch and/or Breakfast Program develop and implement a local “wellness policy” by the 2006-07 school year. In order to meet this federal requirement, the Parkway School District adopted a wellness policy statement (Policy JLCH) in August 2006. By the direction of this policy, a district wellness committee was established to develop guidelines for the implementation of this policy and the assessment of district wellness.

The following school wellness profile will help schools assess programs in their school (e.g. health education, physical education, school lunch program, and counseling) and their effectiveness. Hopefully this profile will provide each school with some baseline data from which discussions can begin to help enhance school wellness.

Each school is asked to assemble a school health committee to complete the attached school wellness profile. The committee should include at least one health/physical education teacher, one food service staff member, one counselor and/or nurse, one general education teacher and one administrator. We also recommend that parents and students have opportunities to provide input about programming and services to enhance school wellness in your building. After completing the wellness profile the school health committee should have a follow-up meeting to identify top priority actions and develop a school health improvement plan.

Making a commitment toward preparing students in their readiness to learn begins with a commitment to improving their health and well-being. The district appreciates your efforts in establishing a healthy learning environment and sharing with us your successes and progress. The wellness profiles should be completed by April 1st in order to allow the district committee time to prepare their annual wellness report to the Board of Education. When you have completed the profile, please return to Ron Ramspott at ISC.

Thank you,

The Parkway School District Health and Wellness Committee
